Z1B restoration

#1 PostAuthor: wierac21 » Tue Aug 18, 2009 6:49 pm

Hey all,

in case you didn't read my new here post, I have recently found out about the zed scene and since then I have been wanting to have a go at one of my own. Well lucky for me I have a pretty good Z1B that has been sitting in my basement under some blankets for about 16 years. It has 16000 original miles and was my grandfathers he bought new in 75.

My grandpa winterized back in 93 but sadly passed away that same winter. Well my father brought the bike to our house and it sat for awhile. My dad tried to get it going but to no avail. He couldn't get it to fire on all four so I guess he kind of gave up. This was probably back in 98 or so. He must have forgot to drain the carbs because as you can see in the coming pics that it was just a nasty mess of gluey, sticky old gas.

So that was my first task at hand to pull the carbs and completely strip and clean them to the best of my abilities. Being 21,my interaction with street bikes is pretty limited, though I have ridden dirt bikes since I was three. So I know my way around carbs etc. and I have the shop manual which is quite useful. Well I pulled off the carbs and got the first one off by itself. The bowl and top cover were stuck :( but after a bit of force (gentle love) they came free and found the jets to be completely full of goo. Cleaned them and blew them out with the air compressor till they were both clean as a whistle.

Then It was onto the slide. What a nightmare. I prolly sprayed a full can of carb cleaner down through the top, on each opposing sides to see if it would pull out. Of course this didn't work. I asked my dad who said I should put them in the oven. I quickly reminded him that I was working on a carb and not a bowl of eggs and flour. Still stumped I turned to good ole google search. I searched stuck carb slide, and to my enjoyment the first entry was from a man on another forum asking about the same question about his stuck 76 z1 carb slide. One of the fellas on there suggest heating up the sides very cleverly with a torch to melt the gas and free the slide. So I took it out to the bench and fired up the propane torch. I heated up the sides (slowly) and made sure to avoid the rubber bits and it couldnt have pulled out any easier (to my amazement).

Did this with the next three and now its time to adjust and re-install them, I need to put some fresh oil, plugs, and gas and see if she will fire. I hooked up a fresh battery and pulled the plugs to see if it would turn over and it most certainly did :D ! So hopefully with fresh gas, oil, and plugs I can at least get it to fire up and then we will get to the expensive part of buying new bits and having some sent out to polish.

Thanks for the views and help Im sure I will have questions coming from all angles soon, so any help would be much appreciated.

Andrew
