Z1000A1 in need of TLC

Here she is - a blank, if grubby, canvas.

She has few dirty habits - she smokes - probably because the former owner was over generous with the oil; only a compression test will tell for sure. She has been bored and fitted with Wiseco pistons - any one know what pressure reading I should expect?

She seems to be running rich and is particularly gutless.

I desperatly want to replace the horrid exhaust with a nice four into one. Ideally it would be a Harris, but they are getting hard to find. I might try and get a set of down tubes if all else fails and have a crack at fabricating a Harris clone outta 316SS. I guess I'll never know if I can do it til I try!

The brakes are virtually non existent. Tomorrow, if time permits, I'll fit braided hoses, master cylinder kit, new pads, new fluid and some freeing stuff to make the caliper pistons move like my dog on a laminate floor. She will then stop on a sixpence .... I hope!

Long term I strip the whole bike and repaint the wheels some colour that isn't gold!!!! Prolly black. The frame will go for powder coating along with all other simlar bits like stands etc. All fixings that have been attacked by Barbarians to tight to buy proper tools (Snap-On) will be replaced, with A4 where possible. I'll prolly fabricate a nice chain guard outta 316SS unless I can get a genuine one cheap enough. I might give spraying a go. If I fail miserably I'm no worse off than I am now, but if I can do it I will feel chuffed. I love learnig new stuff!

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I note the zorsts are discoloured

I own classic Brit Iron and a discoloured zorst often points to overheating (tho' sometimes timing I must admit), which can be attributed to not enough fuel rather than an overly rich fuel mixture.

Following the logic thro' this may mean something more sinister as to why the bike is smoking i.e. too much oil and therefore too much pressure perhaps.

vduk,

Keep in mind that you can't chrome stainless if you make you're own end can. I made that mistake, although I had it polished and the downpipes chromed and you can't tell the difference.

I remember when the A1 was new 1500 pounds, I wanted one then and I would like one now!

Can't start doing the prettying up til the winter.

I fitted a Dyna-S electronic ignition, as suggested by Kev, today along with new Denso plugs and timed up wiv my mates Snap-On timing light. Piece o cake! Also balanced the carbs. The ole gurl is running much, much smoother now.

She still hasn't given up the fags though, but I am ninety percent sure that the valve guides or maybe even just the valve oil seals are to blame. I don't intend to lift the head for the time being though as I'm having far too much fun riding her. Those God aweful Dunlop TT100's really have to go however!
