Thanks for the suggestions guys. I will run the bike with the bellmouths for a while and see how it goes. I suspect the solution will be some custom alloy tubes and some form of foam or S&S filter hidden behind the side panels. The upside of having a minimal electrical system is that there is plenty of space to accommodate things I didn't think I would need; oil catch tanks, bigger filters....
Point also taken about the oil in the catch tank. I have seen some super-neat Japanese ones which come with sight glass and drain plug, so you can see when to empty the tank.

The bike is back from Debben and ready to ride! I am looking forward to my commute tomorrow. The oil cooler is fitted and I think it looks OK. With hindsight (my most developed engineering tool) I could have chosen a bigger cooler but it's OK for now. There's a list of small things to do but nothing major so the main goal is to get some miles on the bike while the summer lasts. The exhaust sounds much quieter than I expected just revving the bike on its sidestand so the louder baffle will probably stay.

After some research, I found these bellmouths in Japan. They have a simple fine mesh filter, are the right diameter to fit round the outside of carb inlets and are short enough to clear the side panels. Third time lucky!
I also fitted an inline fuel filter which you can see in the second pic. There was some cr*p on the float valve seat which caused the carbs to overflow and leak all over the garage floor. I thought the tank was clean inside but I guess you can never get all the dust out. The filter is transparent so I can monitor the cleanliness of the fuel.
I have also fitted a small rear plate, so all that's left is a redesigned tail undertray as the Mk1 design is not stiff enough. I'll probably leave that job for the winter though and just enjoy riding it in the meantime. I parked it in Wimbledon today and a guy came over and started saying how he used to have a Z650, what a lovely bike etc. It certainly isn't a bike for a recluse, it gets attention every time I take it out.

Yes very well done Peter!
A real pleasure to meet you and see the bike in the metal yesterday, truely a beauty to behold
I was mesmerised by yours and Padders Kipkawa as well as the Mk 2 (?) in the middle, my ghast was truly flabbered so I must have seemed a little dumbstruck what with those 3 and the wonderful original examples to feast my eyes on.
I will re read your thread again and then maybe ask a few questions about those calliper carriers...
