What's wrong with running the Z1/9/1000 motor? Much better without the bottom frame rails and there's loads more spares than the J and R motors. That chassis looks to have lots of original bits - mags, Marzocchis, WP. I would go with that and lose the problems later on. You will always have grief if you try and fit the wrong motor.

Hey Magnum1,
That's the plan, I'm trying get hold of an early engine, however this is starting to be a tad difficult.
KWACKERZ1 has put me in contact with someone and I am waiting for a quote, fingers crossed. Other than that I have explored the option of buying a motor from Pit Stop in the US, Harris can do some paperwork that will give the engine 'Temporary Import' status, this means that I don't get hit with taxes. My preference would be to buy an engine from the UK and get it delivered to Harris, this way they can fit it and make sure everything is ok.

I agree, because frames and engines vary. Anyway, why rush, the pleasure is in doing it right and creating a nice balance. I've got three rebuilds on the go and one of them is my Mag 1. This is the fourth time I've rebuilt her and this one will be the best one. I don't get over to Harris much these days, because most of what I needed they have already sorted and I don't have any time! However, if you need any help and I have the time, let me know, they are only about 15 miles away.
I'll be updating my project thread soon. Here's a crap video on youtube, along with a plug for this forum.

The rear shock mount is a weak point, you don't have to be a fat bastard to bend it. Both of my Magnums had this problem when I bought them and I know of someone else that had the same problem. I suspect it was strong enough for nice flat race tracks but not upgraded when the frames were sold for road use. Are Harris upgrading it or just straightening it?

Good point. I don't know as I just entrusted it to Steve Harris. I will check on Monday.

Bit of an update
GaryD from on here has offered me an engine, its a Mk2 and has the top end off. Gary is going to strip it and check the bottom end and make sure all is well down there.
Then the engine will go up to Grumpy 1260's were Chris will rebuild it, after that it will go down to Harris and fitted in the frame.
Bet a lot of people are wondering why I'm doing all this and not just buying an engine in Australia!
Well, can't get one, the only one that is for sale at the moment is a Z900 that needs fully rebuilding and he wants $4,000 for it (2,200 quid)
Also I want Harris to fit the engine in the frame so I know it done right and if there is any cock ups or modification required they can do it there and then.
Another reason is I have already go import approval so the engine gets fitted its still just another bike and the tax and duty I pay has already been confirmed, if I bought an engine from Joe at Pit Stop the duty, freight, tax and insurance added up to just over $1500!
That's the plan and we all know how they usually work out!

Well back to square one!
The engine that Gary has offered has issues so I need another engine!
Can anyone help?
I am starting to think of just bringing the frame over and putting it on eBay and buying a complete Harris, being honest it would work out cheaper!
I didn't think it would be so hard to buy an early engine
