So now I've just got to work out how (or, indeed, if) I can extend the oil pick-up to suit the deep sump, and whether I need to prevent the oil gate from opening as wide as it does...

Quelle surprise, more issues...
Here's the two sumps, and the differences are?...
Image
Obviously, one has got a deep 'pocket' below the oil pickup.
Image
The gate open too far is nothing, it now appears that the pressure release valve wants to live where the gate sits...
Image
And the standard pickup is far bigger than the deepened bit in the sump... as this modified sump didn't have the oil level sender in it (like the GPz1100 Unitrak one I removed) I'm wondering if I was sold one from a different model that isn't fit for purpose?

The gate has been put in 90 degrees out with the mounting bolt hole drilled in the wrong place.
The hinged upright should be against the wall of the oil filter hole with the gate "door" closing the gap in the sump baffle.
When installed correctly the door usually stops against the mounting bolt and in the case of the Geep pump stops against the pressure release valve .
There's a pic on page 1 (post 14) of the Orient Express build thread that shows one fitted .
As for that so called deep sump I wouldn't bother ( the Orient is just fine with just a gate) it's practically useless and the braided earls hose actually aids surge by allowing a path for the trapped oil to feed back to the gearbox end, defeating the object.
If you used an early pump with the bolt on mesh you could have made a bolt on reduced diameter extension to fit in the hole but that's out of the question as you will have no pressure release.
You could fit a pick up pipe screwed or welded in to the pumps inlet but you would loose the filter mesh unless you made something up for the end of the pipe.
Either way I would get rid of the earls hose link if you use it.

Brilliant, thanks Rob and thanks Sanderz! Makes life a little easier with those two answers! Decision made then, original sump with a repositioned gate it is!

The "full" 5 litre deep sump is the best option by far, but oh so rare to get hold of!
I did the hinge mod on my standard sump on the Saxon, and whilst it worked okay the deep sump offered the same result as it's deeper and therefore less easy to spill over if you know what I mean.
I know Egli did a full deep sump and maybe Moriwaki too.

I have a Egli style deep sump and billet pump for my turbo build (not for sale though :D ).
Turbomaxx does a deep sump kit which uses a spacer for the std sump pan but you are looking at around a grand with the pump.

But the amount of chip shop points it would earn would be priceless

So, with the option of an expensive aftermarket deep sump being well and truly out-the-window, the oil gate was being transferred into the 'good' original sump (complete with now irrelevant oil level sender).
Hole drilled and finning relieved on underside so that the allen-headed bolt would sit flush.
Image
And the gate bolted into place, in the correct orientation this time!
Image
So time to offer it up and see if the sump would fit...

...errr, no.
You can just about see the mark where the body of the pressure relief valve was hitting the nut holding the gate in place...
Image
Hello Mr Grinder? Are you available for a few minutes?...
Image
Enough clearance created and the circlip that holds the spring in place can still be fitted.

And, in the meantime, the turbo oil tank, breather tank, and crankcase breather cap all had fittings welded into place by a Man That Can (Thank you Mr Dave Dunlop of FBM turbo systems)

The two tanks will be painted black, and the cap polished.
