Z from the dead....

#1 PostAuthor: Simonh » Thu Oct 29, 2015 9:32 pm

right,... here we go.

i stumbled across a z1000 in a agricultural shed (don't want to use the term "Barn find"...
i knew it had been there for a long time, and finally i purswaded the owner to sell me it.
it had been in bits since 1995... two owners from new, father and son!

never done a resto before (and by no means a mechanic) i said "il have it", little did i know what i was letting myself in for!!!

Photobucket has changed slightly, but it should point you in the right direction.

Looking forward to seeing your project. :up

Looks mostly all there, inc the original pipes which would be a real bonus if in good condition (next to impossible to find and VERY expensive.)

Also note it's a UK bike, which if restored to original would make a pretty rare bike (most are ex yanks).

Good luck with the build.

Original pipes were there (damage to right hand side exhaust...not reparable..ive tried but still got them!) I've got another set I'm negotiating at the moment as OEM is the mission with this bike, I've developed OCD and nothing else will do!!

no expense spared....if the mrs found my receipt folder id be in for a divorce lets say that much!!!!!! (also managed to save the long rear mudguard which looks mint!)
I'm going to fast forward and post some pictures of how she is now, tomorrow night, any interest in the post and i will post bits in between.... every pin, bolt, nut, cable, spoke, lever, electrical part etc on this bike was rotten , ceased or broke.... its been testing!!

engine back from Stephen smethurst castings renovation (Salford), vapour blasted, burnished with ceramics.
new valve guides, valves checked, re ground , OEM stem oil seals fitted, pressure tested... all ok.
bores and pistons measured... all WELL within tolerance.

Picture shown is loosely assembledImage

this is how she is today.

paint HAS NOT been done in this picture (sent to Mark Hutchinson, Pontefract panel and paint..awaiting them back at this current time)

ridiculous amount of chrome, powder coating and time put into this old girl....ive kept going because i do not like to be beaten....she will live again!Image

Very nice engine blasting/coating looks good

The quickest restoration ever in one evening!

Would be interesting to know how you determined which way to go - re coat or new part etc.

Have a spare original paint set for my Thou which I detailed up, but while the paints come up well, I was that never that taken with the Wine Red so I'll probably have it repainted with MUCH more candy to give it a lift.
