Long time since I've updated this thread
Engine is all back in one piece has good compression, I've rewired the bike, what started off as repairing the existing loom soon became a full rewire, the bike now has Dyna 2000 ignition and coils (and a lovely big fat spark)
The starter motor clutch doesn't like the 30% rise in compression, it now slips and I have a 2nd hand complete starter clutch to go in (going to get RobW to look at it before he helps me fit it).
I have two sets of carbs for the bikes, a set of Mikuni BS32s and a set of BS34s that came from DK - the bike has never run on the 34s (despite me cleaning them), but has run on the 32s, I've had a bit of a eureka moment here, I haven't ridden a bike with more than 50bhp since 2003, so why do I want the extra power the 34s will give me, so I'll get it running with the 32s, ride it for a while, get the bores run in etc. then I'll get what it really needs - a set of RS36 Flatslides.

One step forward and another back. It's the same for all of us and just makes the moments when it's all together that bit sweeter.
Ginger Bear had carb issues which has taught me something.
It seems the RS 34's and 36's share needle jet circuits so it would appear to me there is little to choose between the two in terms of ultimate power. I chose 34's because I wanted easier mid range fuelling and whilst 38's will deliver more power the air flow will be less creating difficulties in mid range setting. Or so I thought anyway.
There are plenty more knowledgable people on here than me so I would take advice on choosing carbs with this in mind.
My 34's have no problem with delivering power straight out of the box as shown below. I've since gone a half size larger on the main and will return to the dyno for adjustments to the needles. It runs, it's in ride able condition (looks a bit doggy though) I've just insured it - just got to pluck up the courage to ride it now.

I've ridden it, engine felt lovely for the half mile it ran for, it's not so much fun to push home, think it's not getting enough fuel through the tap, next test ride will be on prime and no hills.

Running for more than half a mile now, checked all the wiring connectors, re ran the fuel hose, cleaned the tap and found out Prime isn't quite where the tap said.
Also drilled and lock wired the sump plug.

Put a few miles on the Z yesterday, went out on the CB400 this morning, it felt gutless and bland after the 1170, but at least it has good steering lock, the Z has lock stops to stop the forks hitting the tank

Z passed it's MOT Saturday, I've put about 120 miles on it since then, it's great to ride, running in at the moment so staying under 6K and cruising about 4K in top (60mph), it makes good power from tickover, handles well at normal road speeds, very good in fast sweeping bends.
I've never had a bike attract so much attention before, it sounds like a Dodge Charger at tickover, dunno why I fitted a quiet exhaust, the induction roar is deafening when you open it up.
Really happy with it, it's turned out better than I thought it would.
Just got to sort out the cosmetics now.

The Z had the humiliation of being recovered today, though it's not a Z part that has failed, feels like the rear wheel bearings have given up in a fairly major way, but could be swingarm bearings, rear wheel is from a much newer Kawasaki and swing arm is 750 Zephyr.
Looks like I'll have plenty to do this weekend.

Update, dropped jetting from 125 to 122.5 today, feels crisper
Tried Dyna 2000 curve 5 instead of 4, went back to 4 as 5 gives it a flat spot at 3K
Koso guage fitted a coiple of weeks ago
Vance and Hines needs flanges made before I can fit it
