glad to hear that the bike is "home" ! You got it running, great! I think rebuilding the carbs is a very wise thing to do.

A few parts arrived now. The fuel tap wasn't flowing very well for some reason even on prime. A new one wasn't over expensive. The obligatory carb kit for a bike that's been laid up for a while and a gasket set..... And a block of pure gold . A Kawasaki shop manual.....

It's been some time since I posted,however I've been pretty busy. As well as the ST I also have a GSX14 which is turning out to be more work than I thought and a 71 Dodge which always requires attention.
Still,i've had the carbs cleaned and rebuilt. I had the full keyster kits fitted and the work was done by Nigel Prescott. An excellent job all round and I can't recommend his work enough.
With the carbs back on the bike fired up pretty much straight away and even ran fairly well with the airbox disconnected.The difference in the cars was evident so it was money well spent.
I can report that the motor is quiet with the exception of one noisy tappet.
However.....today I've done a compression check and found this
So,it's obvious that the top needs to come off and see what I find

I'm in the same boat with my z900, except mine needs a rebore and new pistons & rings. (As I discovered that i had already been honed to remove bore rust, when I got thee head off).
As discussed earlier today, put some oil in the bores and re-run the compression test. If the issues is the bores/rings then you'll see an increase in compression. If not, it's more likely to be valves. When you get the head off, do the paraffin test to determine if the valve seats are leaking.
Hopefully you will get away with a hone and a set of rings and a bit of valve seat lapping. Doing forget new valve stem oil seals while you are at it.
Any issues while you are doing this, give me a shout. Will be great to see your ST on the road.

So.Today I've pulled the top end off.It all came away pretty easily,no seized or rusty bolts which sort of said to me that it's been built not too long ago.
I've taken some pics which i'll add later.
For now I can confirm it's .50 over and has recently had a hone and some new rings,There is some light scoring on the bore so I guess that .50 wasn't enough to clear it ok.
The head looked ok but i'll do a leakdown test shortly.
The cam chain felt tight on the sprockets,the cam bearings are good .
New pistons a and bore are now reqd. I'll get the bit of fin damage repaired while it's in bits.
One thing. When I was loosening the head bolts I found that the two between the cam chain tunnel and number 2 cylinder were only finger tight. Number 2 cylinder was the one with the lowest compression and when the engine was warm it did seem to breathe quite heavily from the crank breather......

I'm waiting for the pictures to see the "damage". It could be some discolouration from not running that will go away when the engine is running again. I would be very surprised that a technician who respects himself would do an engine rebore and would leave damage to the bores.
I think someone forgot to tighten the cylinder head nuts after the engine cooled down after the first run.
I hope it turns out OK for you.

Me too has a said toy, I'm in Bingley as you all know, mines a 1075 E2 powdercoated purple with deep black paintwork, lacking the original front forks and airbox, the motor was rebuilt at Debbens no expense spared, it was a toy of misspent youth, the bloke was an author, and the poor bike was laid on its side with the rest of his stuff as he sailed round Europe and the Adriatic( must be nice for some) eventually when he split with the missus he came home his boat in drydock for work, this was 2012, I saw it for sale and drove down for it, £800 quid later its mine, so its not as old as the 1R being a W reg but with the refinements of the MK11 motor, and back then a £1500 quid rebuild and new Harris!!! Why Not

Breathing heavily from the crank breather would indicate to me that you're losing compression down the bores.
Looks like you're in the same boat as me with my 900. Been honed in an effort to resolve an issue and hasn't worked..

Hi guys
don't forget there's air under the pistons in the cranckcase and when the pistons are forced down by the expanding gasses, that air has to go somewhere. It's normal that there's pressure inside the engine when it's running!
When opening the oilfiller plug you can feel the pressure. If you do, make sure you have a cloth in your hands to cover the opening and preventing oil particles all over the place and yourself!

Yep why not, I own my own pressure washer rep company, sales, company, just me and our lass, like the stuff you sell, your only overt valley ow far on riddy are you? my mate owns K.A.P. Darren though Z owners, one wannabee lives in Eldwick, my other daft mate, who luckily lives a safe distance away in Horseforth does own a Z1100st, and calls me weekly on the how do I do, where can I get, have you got, yep, poor me.

That's just what I was thinking
When I say heavy breathing it was smoking thru the back of the airbox so much I thought it was on fire.....
