It’s nice to see one being cleaned up with some of the patina preserved.

I'm also doing a 1973 2 owner Z1, last owner being Rick Brett. It's a "Preservation" not a restoration.
I'll put some photos when I get it back together.
One thing that's struck me, is that after 45years you can see the thought that went into the design of the bike.

Would be great to compare notes. I saw your thread - looks like a very similar proposition to mine.
Any chance you could post some pictures of the decals on the rear tail unit (the ones visible when you lift the seat). I think I’m missing a couple of mine. Thanks, James

Thanks Chris. Have to admit, it’s a fine line to tread but hopefully Incan do the bike justice without over-restoring it.

Re: 1972 Z1 Recommission / Rebuild - Vin # Z1F-01173
Spent some time cleaning the original exhausts. My go-to polish is now Quick-Glo (supplied by Nigel on the forum). It's superb stuff & leaves a nice wax sealant behind.
Hard surface rust was removed with a brass hand brush (light pressure applied with some WD40 as a lubricant). Given how rough they looked, I'm pleased with the results. I may well invest in a set of unstamped/no-clip pipes in the new year, but for now, these will do & fit the patina of the bike. Just a shame the lower RH pipe has some damage/rash. I imagine finding a correctly stamped, good condition replacement will be nigh-on impossible.

Original electrical panel lightly cleaned & reinstalled:
Refurbished switch gear re-fitted (thanks to Brown Critchlowe for doing these for me). Managed to source a NOS Kawasaki LH rocker switch to replace the broken original:

Hi James
great buy! Congratulations! Finding a '72 Z1 is, like finding the holy grail, allmost impossible to do but you succeeded!
She's in a great condition as far as I'm concerned. Try to get her as complete as possible and ride her. I think you'll have to replace the original air box because those have a tendency to shrink. The replicas are good, so don't bother, buy a new one.
I'm very curious to see her finished. Keep posting !

Alternator cover polished & new alternator harness guide grommet fitted - will probably add some black silicone as well to ensure an oil-tight seal:
Original chrome brake stay, brake lever, gearchange lever, starter motor cover polished:

Quickly cleaned the date codes on the rims - seem plausible for a 10/72 date of manufacture for the bike.
Front rim: 2I 303 (September '72)
rear rim: 2G 303 (July '72)

Thanks Philippe - good to hear from you again. I'll keep the info/photos flowing as/when I make more progress. Will slow down during the Christmas break & pickup again in the new year.
Note re airbox - mine seems nice and supple but won't really know until I try and fit the carbs. James.

Early head with integrated vacuum take-off ports. The carb holders have obviously been replaced at some point as these have the later integrated vacuum ports as well.
Anyone ever modified these to look like the original early no-stub type? (not sure I can be bothered ).

It's amazing what polishing up an old bike can do to make it look tons better. A great start I'd say.
