Shame about the fin damage. I've just got the top of my ST. #2 was low on compression @ 70 and the fluid I checked it with leaked out quite quickly

Fin damage easily fixed though and you won't be able to tell it's been repaired, especially if it's getting painted over.

A little more work / investigation on the engine, unfortunately I had a couple of 6mm bolts snap then borrowed an impact gun ( getting one of these) after starting with the gun every bolt came out quick and easy so much so I got a bit carried away with the strip down,
Found that the front cam chain guard is missing it looks like it snapped at the mounting bolt but is not in the engine and the bottom cam chain roller has seen better days

Hi Gavin
since you're stripping the engine, replace the whole camchain system, chain, guide, rollers, rubbers, tensioner parts,...the engine will run much quiter afterwards. It costs a lot of money but now is the time to do it. Mind when you buy a new camchain; it has 124 links!!! not 122 like the older zeds.

Philippe.
Thanks for your info. I know about the 124 links on the cam chain, the upper guides are in very good condition with no play, I will be putting a new chain in while it motor is apart also a new front guide and a lower roller
Also pics of the motor so far

Hi Gavin
after seeing the condition of the lower roller, it's high time to change that one! If the upper guides are also the original ones, I would change them too! Keep in mind that these are also as old as the lower roller and that there's rubber in them..Keep also in mind that the front roller gets most of the tension ...
There are solid cam chain sprockets available, they perform better than the originals and last longer.
Just take a look at this link.

It would be a shame to put the engine together without changing the upper chain sprockets.
