Z1000 MK2

#1 PostAuthor: Ultim8pc » Mon Mar 25, 2019 10:41 am

Been trying now for a few years now to find a half decent MK2 project and finally just picked this one up.
From what I can see it's all there and original with the exception of the exhaust, rear shocks, seat cover and brake lines.
Oh and it's been re-painted in the black and gold 'H' colours. But under the tank you can see the original blue colour.
Not been on the road since 2007 (when it had allegedly had a top end rebuild) and it comes with every MOT cert issued.
Apparently it went through Z-Power at come stage in it's life and I'm awaiting info from them about that.

My plan is a full restoration to standard trim. I'll need to sell some of my other stuff to fund this though... :(

Simonic,
Yes it has a complete airbox. In fact there isn't much missing.
Came with a new front end in a box (forks, top and bottom yokes with stem and headlamp brackets)

Good idea, I'll post up a complete list of the bits I'm looking for shortly.

For now, In know I need:
Exhaust (Has a rusty Motad)
shocks (has Marzochis)
Seat (has one but wrong cover and base is tatty)
Chainguard (damaged)
Rear mudguard (quite tatty)
Front mudguard (has been painted so I'll have to see what it's like underneath)
Handlebars (Has some non-standard lower ones fitted)
Front master cylinder lid (damaged)
Grab handles (none with bike)

Ideally I'll looking for OEM stuff, but will use repro if needs must.
Plan is to carry out a full resto to original spec.

Thanks for the parts tips Harty, I'm building up a spreadsheet of what I need and what's available as OEM and repro.

Looks like a repro seat may be the way to go. However, I'll strip the existing seat down and see if the base and foam are usable and maybe look into re-covering.

If you can Save the tin seat base do, i believe new ones are not metal
new Foam is available and seat covers, try to get them together from the same place I was told by a trimmer
if the old foam has been cut up you can or someone can Glue new bit on to it and get it back to stock shape or if its had bits added they can be cut off, its only foam at the end of the day

let me know if I can help and if you come across a pile of bit please let me know and will do like wise

As I have a few projects on the go some running and rolling some all in bits I do get lost at times to just what I may need Hope to have my New parts storage container sorted very soon, then I will have a Racking for each Bike's parts, this will make things a lot better to find things and know what I have and still need

MK2 wise all the electrics other than lights and clocks I still need and fork legs

I think my seat base looks like it's been welded previously and looks a bit scabby. Won't know until I get it stripped. I've re-foamed and recovered seats before (but I'm no expert).
I'll be fitting the new forks to my MK2 so the currently fitted ones would be available, one leg is pitted though.
Phillipe, thanks for the link. It's a pity they couldn't have done a better job of painting the seat base though!

Hi
Good for you! Sometimes rare, original parts show up in Germany. Just keep an eye on those sites.
