I'm back!!





While at my local bike importers last week looking for some carb parts I somehow ended up with this 1972 Z1. Went home to share the good news with the wife and she's still here (thank the Lord). I've started polishing some of the chrome and ally on the bike and underneath it all not to bad. My first resto was a 1976 Z1000A1 which i unfortunately had to sell when we moved a couple of years ago. This one will get a gentler refub, frame and engine painted, bodywork too but the rest i shall buff up.

I need to strip down the engine as the bike has a cam chain issue, in the absence of the 2 prypoints these early engines don't have, any tips on splitting the barrel from the crankcase would be appreciated.

hope to have her ready for next spring, wish me luck.

very nice find! Congratulations!
A lot of work to do but a '72 Z1 is worth it.
To remove the barrels I would suggest you take a soft hammer and give gentle knocks on both sides of the barrels.
If a small gap shows, put a flat screw driver in the gap and gently widen it. The barrels will come off in the end.

If this turns out to be half as good as the Z1000 A1 you sold me it will be a stonker!

One thing to be aware of Dave...I recently had to have a cam cap repaired on a Z900 I was building for a chap and found that even with that amount of repair weld showing, it was holding off the cam cover from being tightened down correctly. It's worth checking before you try to tighten the cam cover down as the clearance available is quite small.

sorry i havent posted regarding the z1 for a while, thanks for the comments. i have just had the garage refurbished , new roof and drylined to keep the winter out. moving everything back this weekend and then i shall be completing the z1 and looking forward to getting out on her next year. ive had the bike running and will try and post a video of it on here next week (not sure if i can but will give it a go any tips would be appreciated). i shall post some more pics here next week too. replying to some of the comments, nice to hear from Lacy regarding the z1000A1, lovely bike that one and i hope your having as many good times on her that i had. To reply to Steve the welding on the cam cap doesn't appear to sit proad of the cam cap bolts, i have fitted the camchaft cover and all seems to be ok, looking at the cam caps it looks like on the earlier engines these appear to be smaller but i will lift the cover and recheck. thanks for the tip. To Jimmock the bike was manufactured 1st December 1972 and number range between 3600-3700. registration next i have the title, dating letter from Kawasaki so hopefully ok, need to get the application in as this lockdown wont help. Getting there with it now. Got the exhaust on but had to bend the bracket. I'm happy so far. Need to sort my list out for some more bits from z power.
