Z1R Project

#1 PostAuthor: GreenMamba » Wed Jul 03, 2019 7:30 pm

Hey everyone I joined recently as I got myself a life long bucket lister it’s a 78 Z1R. I probably paid to much for what I got but it’s done now and I need to keep going. The pistons were removed years ago according to the po and it seems care was taken at some point. There is loads missing but mainly small stuff like the FLYWHEEL ! I saw that today so 8m a little miffed also found a ball in the sump I think it’s from behind the clutch but I can’t get the hub out as I don’t have the tool as yet otherwise it’s a good bike here are some pics, I’m also on the ZRXOA and have a thread running there if you see anything I haven’t or have bits and pieces I need please feel free to let me know please thanks Carlo

hi Greenmamba, the bb 5, looks like its from the clutch. it goes behind the spring plate pusher 18 and is pushed by the push rod 6.

Hi GreenMamba

good luck with the project!
A lot of work but a very good starting point.
Almost all the parts are there.
The Z1R uses the same rotor as the Z1000A2, it's the one without the woodruf key.
The carbs you have are most likely from a Z1000 St or MK2 (the vacuum port on the third carb). The engine will run but you have to do the initial carb setting as on the ST or MK2, not the one from the Z1R .
Good luck!

Ok so Sunday night update time for those that are following. I have now stripped the entire bike and have the rolling chassis waiting for paint. I stripped down the sub assembly had a bit of a fight with the front sprocket nut but that was about all. It's really really tarnished inside so will have to get it steam cleaned then soda blasted before paint and reassembly. I cleaned a few parts in my sonicator which I love it takes cleaning time in half and gets in the hard to reach spots. Now have to start planning out the spares as this isn't going to be a cheap affair but I cannot wait to swing a leg over and go for a ride

Hi Greenmamba
I have no idea if that one would work but I know for sure that a fuel level sender of a Z1000ST works, I did put one in the small tank of my Z1R. You only have to bend the metal rod a bit to make it indicate the fuel level more or less correct.
Mind that the six little bolts have a special shape and use a new gasket when installing it.
