Re: Double the troublezz. AMA style Z1000 and Moriwaki Z1R Turbo.
To complete the back suspension I just need some shock mounts.
The B frame came without any ( but was powder coated which was weird ) and the Z1R's were rotten but I had planned to lay the shocks down so they would have been coming off anyway.
I've started by knocking up a drilling/welding jig and components to accurately position the mounts.
The round eyed bars are the substitute shock struts and the flat bar is to position the drilling and welding pin fixtures..
The top pin on the left is the drill guide for the 8mm pilot and the right one goes in the drilled hole afterwards to lock the jig in position so that the other side can be done .
The two lower thumb wheel bolts run up to the frame to keep the bars parallel and equidistant on either side of the frame when it comes to welding on the new mounts .
The whole lot bolts to the frame pivot and swingarm with suitable spacers at the pivot to match the width of the swingarm shock mounts and triangulates the position for drilling the frame.
A 6mm bolt in the top eye of the struts keeps the pins and struts locked in position..
The current set up is ready for drilling the laid down position and the large uppermost hole is the correct distance for the original shock position if I ever need it for a future project...
Next job is to get the Black and Decker out.

Re: Double the troublezz. AMA style Z1000 and Moriwaki Z1R Turbo.
Pilot holes drilled and reamed to take 12mm inline guide bar and 20mm cutter for hole to take new shock mount.
Only the outer side is opened up to 20mm as the new mount is stepped down to 12mm on the inner side
Mount on and jigged up ready for welding.
And done.

Re: Double the troublezz. AMA style Z1000 and Moriwaki Z1R Turbo.
Shock mounts on the Z1R's XJR arm sit 15mm wider each side than on the B's so I've added a support tube to the new frame mounts that will also double as bracing for that corner
B frame
Next on the agenda is to sort out the front ends and get them on their feet.

Re: Double the troublezz. AMA style Z1000 and Moriwaki Z1R Turbo.
Great progress your making it all look so easy Even though half of the build is fabricating the tooling The XJR arm looks really good in the frame, how far back is the shock mount from the pivot point ?

Having seen the bikes in the flesh last weekend, I have to reiterate this point, and they look much better in the flesh!

wow, very impressive work & posting, I now feel completely useless lol
Re: Double the troublezz. AMA style Z1000 and Moriwaki Z1R Turbo.
Very slow progress recently due to a properly buggered knee and waiting for the peeps at the hospital to give it a poke.
So! To keep things moving and something shiny to look at, this dropped on my doormat this morning for the Z1R turbo motor.
Murdoch racing undercut gearbox with Orient Express billet second gear.
Hopefully that will keep the power going in the right direction when the time comes.

Always excited when I see a post on this thread

And just like busses I've also managed to acquire the very elusive front cover for the Bill Hahn boost retard ignition.
The catch though was that I had to buy the other ignition it came already attached to .
Fortunately you can never have too many spares and these things are scarce but the bonus was that a lot of the parts were better than what I already had on the far left so I can build a real nice one from the two and refurb the other.
I wasn't happy about the look of the manky old yellowed plastic dizzy bodies that won't clean up so decided to buy a chunk of ally and have a crack at making something a bit nicer to replace them..
There you go.
Just enough material to make two.
Much better and just need to get the rest of the parts looking as good.
And on top of that I've also been in touch with Bill Hahn JR in the states and got a handful of original NOS top pulleys he had sat on a shelf for forty years at less than I can make them for myself. Result !
Also a big thanks to AL for donating an ATD to replace one which had broken stops .
