Thanks.
Whats best way to get that cylinder and head deep black again without painting? Or was it more or less like that when new?

Hi Uli
very nice bike! A '79 Z1000A3 , better known as a MK2. It has a Z1R 4 in 1 exhaust and some after market foot rests and the rest of the bike is allmost complete.
As far as the colour of the barrels and head is concerned: the black faded to dark grey when the bike was riding in the rain. Not much you can do to get the colour back.
Not much work to do to get this one in a perfect condition.
Congratulations once again!

Re: Just landed: Z1000 MK2
Sadly, both PO passed away.
The first owner modified the bike with those Raask footrest, Koni shocks, and Z1R exhaust. It furthermore had a Rickman fairing and Tomasselli bars. All is documented in her "papers" and MOT approved.
So I dont have access to the original parts, mainly the 4-2 exhaust, footrest/brake lever etc. and the shocks, if they are still there.
I assume, that will cost a fortune to go back to stock condition.
That Z1-R exhaust will be for sale then.
BTW: does the Mk2 (as the ST do) have a (emergency) kickstart somewhere under the seat?

Seen that and agree. You will have to dig a bit deeper.

Try using back to black( Simoniz jet black trim restorer ) on the engine ,paint it on with a small artist brush , then wrap a cloth around the wooden end to remove excess & polish ,fits in between the fins nicely , may have to do it a few times , works on me Z1 .Nice bike by the way ,bit of elbow grease & she will be sorted . :

Re: Just landed: Z1000 MK2
uli, the bike should have a kicker fitted, the rubber spline cover is probably from a z1r. the rear-sets would foul the kick-start so it was probably removed to fit them. Nice find.. m

Re: Just landed: Z1000 MK2
Thanks for input. Yes, that makes sense with the kickstrat. Found a nice used one on ebay. I´m allways trying to avoid replica parts.
Will try that back to black stuff. Hope I will find it here.
Allready spent 6h of elbow grease (two evenings) on cleaning the bike. The more I do, the more i love it.
Front end:
Engine, done with Armor All. Pic was taken when it still was wet, that wil not last. But gives me an idea how it could look like.
Downpipes. As front fender done with that amazing UK chrome polishimg cream.
Start thinking about keeping that Z1-R exhaust. Fits perfectly, looks cool.
I know, not the best choice powerwise
Tried to make a pic that shows that fab. Luminous Dark Red paint.
In most pics I see, its too bright. In fact its rather dark, almost burgundy

Thanks.
I don´t want to bore you. Its mainly just cosmetical work
Went further on the left side.
Cleaned the engine, put off those Raask footrest, slightly polished the two engine covers.
Luckily I found new footrests and that odd "German" gear lever ....
... as well as the tool tray in my left over Z1-R spare parts
Waiting for some bolts, handle bar and misc. stuff from Z fever
Cheers, Uli
