Found a good set of cams, so the engine is now almost done. Also fitted a homemade manual camchain adjuster. Next is to source a set of manifolds to suite the RS34 flatslides, then they can be test fitted.

Looks good :up

I'm sure you're fully aware, but don't tension the cam chain until the cam cover is on
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

The last piece of the jigsaw needed to complete the motor, is a starter Idler gear. A new one from Z-power is £400 ! so been looking on Ebay. I suspect the same part is also used on other models as my Gpz1100B1, maybe a Z1100 or Z1000J, or do all Zeds use the same part?

Could anyone confirm what other models share the same Starter Idler gear ?

BTW just bought another Zed project, this time a Mk2.. in bits..

Yes! Same gear on all Z1 through GPZ11 aircooled fours with only some visual cosmetic differences over the years.

For future reference, The CMSNL site part diagrams do show against the parts which other model the part is used on so its a useful resource for finding alternative parts.

I ordered the wrong stator from Electrex, not sure how, but the correct part is on the way, along with a more stainless bolts from Pro-Bolt. Once fitted the engine will be pretty much complete, except for the dyna ignition, which I haven't bought yet.

The outrigger drive sprocket wont be fitted until the engine is back in the frame, so we can make sure the chain run is ok. When that will be I don't know, as the frame still needs work before going off to Triple S for powder coating.

The fibreglass seat base proved to be tricky to get right, in the end we cut away the most uneven section and used an aluminium plate glassed into the underside, to both support the threaded mounting studs and give a smoother, straighter edge to the seat base. Its now gone off to a local upholsterer, who said it'll be done in about 4 weeks. He specialises in camper vans, and he's never been busier than the last year.

The frame is having a stainless splash guard and undertray made at the moment, and once that's done, just need to tidy up some of the welds, before it can finally go to Triple S for powder coating.

I'm going to have to finish my long running Guzzi project, before the final assembly of the Zed can begin, as I have no where else to build it.

The frame has been cleaned up ready for powder coating at Triple S at the end of the week. While an undertray and splash guard have now been made from stainless plate. In the pic below they still have engineers blue on them, while the neater fasteners will be used in the final build.

Bought a fibreglass replica of a BMW R90S cockpit fairing, seems to fit the front end ok, without the need to modify the fairing. Still got to make its mounts, along with completing the mounts for the 7 inch Z1 headlight. Wasn't sure how it would look on a Zed, but looks ok. My mate said it reminded him of bikes in the first Mad Max film..

Took awhile but finally got the correct inlet manifolds to fit the Mikuni RS34 carbs, along with a Dyna S ignition. The frame is away being powder coated, so when its back, the engine can go in the frame and the final assembly can begin.

Finally got the Gpz1170 engine in the Z650 frame, though it put up a fight. We had to remove the sump and cut back a tab that had been added to mount the Z1 side panel. The latter being done after the engine had gone off to be rebuilt. There's enough left of the tab that I can drill and mount a replacement for the piece we had to hacksaw off. Thankfully it behind the side panel so will be hidden from view. Note that the front rubber engine mount has been replaced with a solid mount, using top hat spacers.
