Blimey, had the engine been running with all that shrapnel in the bottom ?

Bloody hell........ that is a lot of metal.
Re: New GPZ1100B1 project arrived today
I got the engine running before I stripped it so I guess the bits must have been in the bottom.
Still have to do a thorough inspection but no damage spotted yet.
Some chunks were quite big so very luck me thinks

Actually sounded quite healthy
After a run, a compression check showed 3 were low with 1 only having 90psi
The strip down begins:

This project is going to take quite a while due to a lack of spare time.
So I wanted an engine stand which I could move if needed.
I found one by Sealey for about £80 but the weight limit was 75KG. I think the GPZ engine is a bit heavier than this so it might not be too stable.
I found another one but it was bench mounted and £160
In the end I got 2 car engine stands for £37 each and joined them together. After making some brackets out of angle iron it's just the job and is strong enough to hold any bike engine going.
Very pleased with the result and the engine can spin round as needed to do work

Next stage strip and rebuild the engine
Check the shim clearances , could be overly tight holding the valve open , I had that on a GS750
yes you can have too many bikes
Re: New GPZ1100B1 project arrived today
I've had a bit more progress on the GPZ since my last post.
The engine casings have been prep'd and sprayed.
The bottom end is now nearly back together and looking like new. I used the Simoniz tough black paint for the first time and very pleased with the results.
No worn parts in the bullet proof bottom end.
I obviously replaced all gaskets and also used new seals.
New stainless allen screws were fitted where needed and a new cam chain fitted.
And most importantly, everything turns as expected and all the gears work
Next steps:
Measure clutch plates and replace if needed then put back together
Paint engine casing's with Simoniz Gloss Engine Enamel
Get new rubber seal/wiring for Alternator cover and put it back together.
Fit new sleeve on wires from ignition pickups and re-fit.
New oil filter back in and a new sump plug (magnetic) to replace the knackered one.
After all that I can spin the engine over and start on the pistons, barrels, head etc

Hi JimboUK
very nice job, very nice indeed!
That 'll be a clean engine. That's the way I like it.

Re: New GPZ1100B1 project arrived today
So it’s been a slow year on the project due to time and money but it’s kicked up a gear recently.
During the summer I rebuilt the brakes with all new internals where needed.
I also rebuilt the clocks which had a murky tint on the inside
The original head was a mess.
I picked up another one which was re-worked to an expected super high standard by Buzzard which I then painted.
Then I’ve rebuilt the engine to this.
Next step on the engine is shims and put the top on then it’s finished but I broke my wrist today so no more work for a few weeks
I picked up a steel JMC and welded on the missing chain guard bracket. Then I got the swing arm, frame and a whole bunch of other bits powder coated.
Then there are new shocks to go on
So I’m now starting to see light at the end of the tunnel.
I also picked up a bodywork set off a mate of mine.
He had it back in the 80’s as a spare set for an 1100R.
He painted it and never used it so it’s mint.
So, do I have an orange GPZ or do I pay loads to get it red.
From a cost point of view it might start life orange
Next steps .....
Find someone to do the wheels black with silver rims and spoke sides ... any suggestions.
Finish engine
Rebuild forks
Slowly start the full rebuild

Re: New GPZ1100B1 project arrived today
Couldn’t resist doing the shims and putting the top on with my broken wrist.
Was a bit painful but worth it.
Engine rebuild is fundamentally done after nearly a year !
Looks much better as well with the UK rocker cover I managed to get hold of.
Very pleased it’s done properly and should run well.
Next job is to blank off where the injectors should go.
When I got the bike it was converted to carbs and the injector holes were bunged with some sort of putty.
The head was shagged so I got another one and gonna blank them off properly
Got some o rings and ally and will knock something up on the lathe

I finished making the blanking plugs for the injector holes. They came out ok

Re: New GPZ1100B1 project arrived today
Finally after many hours it’s starting to look like a bike again.
Had some mates up from Hastings at the weekend for a bike rebuild, Paella and lots of beer.
A pile of finished bits turned into something that looks like a bike again
There’s light at the end of the tunnel

Good B1 seat for sale I have.
Carb wouldn´t bother me.
If you want sell the exhaust i´d offer you EURO 550 + shipping cost. Would like to see those dents anyway.
Sorry to jump in but I've just found out my B1 seat isn't actually a B1 seat base but a ELR with a similar cover - thanks to Bob the Seat for the info.
So if the B1 seat isn't being taken up then I'd be interested
