Gpz 1100 A2 (Uni-Trac) restoration
Hi men
I took the decision of starting the restoration of a Gpz 1100 A2, a Uni-Trac.
I bought the bike in the summer of 2019 together with a Gpz 1100 A1.
I have the documents for the A2 but not for the A1 so the best looking bike will become the donor bike...
Just to fresh up your memory the pictures of the bikes when I bought them in 2019 .
This is the bike that will be restored.
It's dirty, painted with a brush!!! and missing a lot of parts but I have the papers!
This is the donor bike...I know it's a sin to use this one as a donor bike
If I'm able to find a wreck of a Gpz1100A2 maybe I keep this one as she is...who knows, time will tell.

I have no idea what happened to the documents. They're lost. The bike is not reported as stolen ! I checked it
In the mean time I'm taking the A2 apart and decided to keep the A1 as she is and find the missing or damaged parts for the A2.
Quite a challenge! More news about that the following weeks.

it's time for a little update.
The bike is taken apart, almost all the parts need repainting, replating, refurbishing ...She's in a terrible state.
Just a few pictures.
Since Halloween isn't that long ago it's time for a little show of horrors I encountered during disassembly.
This happens to needle bearings when there's no more grease in them because the oil seals are deteriorated
The needles were grinded to dust.
The bleeding nipple of the rear brake caliper was broken off, when I tried to get it out the thread came out along with the rest of the bleeding nipple. I tried to tap a new thread in it but it didn't worked out.
The piston is damaged by rust
Sometimes in the past the left hand footpeg was changed...with the one of a Gpz 750. They look the same but they're different, the one that was mounted is too short.
If you need a U shaped grommet but you don't have one what would you use? Yes correct, a part of a disc grinder !!!
When opening the engine something fell out of the transmission cover, bad news, a part of the lower crankcase was broken off, I hope it can be welded...
The internals of the fuel tank...rust, rust, rust, let's hope we can get it clean and rust free.
So, as you can see it's a project, a difficult one but I hope I can get it right.
Time will tell.

I decided to do some cleaning of the internal parts of the fuel tank, the level sender, the tap, the return valve and last but not least, the fuel tank cap.
If you decide to do this you have to be very calm, don't do this when you're nervous!!!
I started with the fuel tap, disassembly, cleaning inside and out .
Then I cleaned the fuel level sender, yes it can be opened and cleaned inside! You just have to take care that the thin copper wire doesn't brake loose.
Afterwards the return valve was taken care of and yes it can be opened and also cleaned .
It's important that the valve can move, it closes when the fuel pump is not working thus preventing fuel to flow from the fuel tank.
And for the final part I became nervous in the end!
The fuel tank cap. It has a true lock inside! Not like the lock in our "old" zeds that can be opened with any key but a real lock!
I didn't have the original key so it took me a few hours to disassemble it.
The lock has a lot of parts. Just have a look for yourself.
They all have to be mounted in the correct way and in the correct order or the lock doesn't work!
I hope you can see why I became nervous...
But in the end I'm pleased with the results.

it's been a few weeks since my last post but I'm back with news.
I found a B1 engine, in a terrible state but with a good cylinderhead and lots of other usable parts.
During disassembly I broke two pistons but I found two replacements in Germany problem solved.
I could also buy a wreck of a Gpz1100A2, without the engine and the injection but with a lot of other usable parts that were missing.
It came with an original exhaust in a very good shape and with two good tyres. Since I'm not planning to ride the Gpz 1100 those old tyres will be mounted for display.
For the moment I'm cleaning parts, putting them in boxes and making a list of the missing parts.
I have 95 % of all the parts, the missing parts are small ones like: needle bearings, oil seals, gaskets, rubbers,...
The engine of the B1 is taken apart, and together with the engine parts of the A2 I'll make a B2 engine.
That engine will be mounted in my Gpz1100B2. The Uni-Trac engine of the B2 will be mounted in the Uni-Trac frame. As you can read there's still a lot of work to be done.
I cleaned the engine, and today I repainted the engine parts. As always, the old paint was removed by using brushes and a lot of elbow grease.
See for yourselves.
The majority of the parts in the last two pictures will receive a glossy clear coat so they will be shiny like the original parts.
More to come within a short time.
