So, while I am waiting for the carb and fuel tap rebuild bits, I thought I would check the valve clearances as it was a bit tappy when running.
Don't think the camchain had been adjusted for a bit so slackened off the adjuster as per.....
Took the cam cover off and cams look fine but.....looks like something has gone a bit Pete Tong at some point in the last 40 odd years.

Best tidy the cover up with the dremel methinks!

Don't you just love 'em?

So, checked the valve shim gaps at the weekend.
Inlets are all 0.05mm and exhausts are all 0.12mm. Been set up pretty accurate previously but, after receiving info from knowledgeable peeps on here, they seem a bit on the tight side. :rock
Best get a lifting tool ordered!
Assume it is one shim out, measure, replace and repeat for all eight?

The 0.12mm ones are fine.
The 0.05mm need reset to 0.1 ish.
When you remove the shims the shim thickness should be ink stamped on the underside.
They go in 0.05mm increments.
You then just need to replace with a new shim that is the next shim size down, for example "260" out then "255" in.
Obviously unless you happen to have a stock of the right shims you will have to take em out, check them and put them back in and re-order the correct ones.
Or if you are really lucky you might just need one new shim and be able to shuffle a few of them about.
Fat chance if your luck is like mine :D

:??
I suppose that every multiple owner old bike must have had, at some point, at least one absolute arse of an owner who, for want of a better expression, couldn't bang a nail in straight!
When the bolt bottoms out, stop turning!!

This is the nearside lower engine mount bolt....which is about an inch too long....they just kept turning...luckily it hasn't gone through the engine casing!
Thankfully I'm going through everything slowly.
Just need to find out why there is a load of silicone on the chain split link?!? Answers on a postcard please...

After sorting out all the bodges I took her out for a wee 20 mile run to make sure everything was okay...
20210904_185604.jpg
....apart from the hellish noise from the open kerker (needs a baffle) it would appear it is chucking oil down the exhaust.

Ah well, thought I might be able to run her for a few months before stripping everything....bugger.... :sad
