Frame supposedly is a '75 but I'll have to check the numbers.
She turns over, has good compression and sparks from the Dyna S bits.
As if I've got nowt else to do!!

the frame seems to be a Z1000 A frame ( exhaust hangers) but with a "wrong number". Obviously stamped in afterwards regarding the poor quality of the stamping...
Have a look at the "1" , it doesn't have the short stripe above left, going downwards under an angle.
The front fork seems to be from a Z1000A2 as are the brake calipers and the front main brake cylinder.
The cranckcase has a Z1B engine number and the 28 mm Z1B carbs are mounted.
I hope there's something mentioned on the documents about the frame.
I do know about Z1 type bikes that received a Z1000 frame after a serious accident when the Z1 frames were no longer available.
My information regarding the frames comes from the German forum.
Just make sure you get it MOT'ed before spending much money on the bike...
I don't want to take your dream away, I only want to warn you !
Anyway, I consider the bike as a challenge and I would have a great time restoring her if she was mine.

I brought it in from Michegan so, being Ameridoodle, it most probably was/is an LTD at some point in its existence. I bought it as a late framed Zed with a z1b engine, complete with full title, so no surprises really Philippe. Thanks for the clarification on the running gear etc...and yes I certainly agree about the restamped frame. I've compared the letters and numbers to my z1r and they have certainly reframed this sometime.
I'll run this for the summer then decide what to do with it.....its not original so really a blank canvas....I've got a full toecutter/goose fairing kit in the loft.....who knows??

That's never been a ltd ever! it's a KZ1000 a1or a2, that may have been a replacement frame, badly stamped, or nicked and badly re-stamped.

Well...started by stripping the bar switches and, considering how grungy and paintless they are, they came apart no bother Not a knackered screw head anywhere! Result in my book! But best not speak too soon eh?
Does anyone have a preferred way of cleaning the housings? I was gonna degrease them then put them in the ultrasonic?

Pete frame is 1000 a1- a2, rear footrest hangers are unique to it.

Hey Pete

the switch is clearly from a Z1000A1 or A2. I can see that because the little part with the half round gap at the top of the picture (second from the right) is to lead the electrical wires into the handlebar. Have a look at the right hand side of the lower shell. There should be numbers stamped in it. Probably a 7 with two numbers behind or an 8 with two numbers behind. The first number indicates the year, the two other numbers indicate the month.
Those can give you an indication of the year the bike was build if the switches are original and if they're not replaced afterwards for some unknown reason.
I bet your bike was an A2 (1978) If the clocks are original, the red line of your rev counter starts at 8500 RPM and the fuel tap is vacuum steered (res-pri-on). That is, again, if the parts are genuine.

I think you were on the right track initially Philippe....it most probably has been reframed/rebuilt years ago.
I've had a look at the switchgear and can just make out 809. It has worn away but just readable.
The fuel tap is a non-vacuum with two outlets, but again could have been replaced, maybe to match the z1b carbs?
What do you make of the headlamp bracket?

and the clocks?

the headlamp bracket seems to be Ltd in my humble opinion, if I'm wrong, someone else will correct me.
The fuel tank has clearly another exit than the Z1000A2, I guess a Z1000A1 or Ltd fuel tank but that's difficult to say with just one picture.
The rev counter is not a Z1000A2 one.
You really have a mishmash of parts but don't mind, make a safe bike out of it and enjoy it!
