Re: Z 1000 ST ELR
Hi rickm
they were mounted on a Z1000ST E2 I bought in France a few months ago in november 2021.
I have no idea how they behave on the road but I'll find out within a few months when I start riding the bike.
Some write that they're no good, others say they're good for the money they cost, I have no idea...

Re: Z 1000 ST ELR
Hello guys
I've made some more progress yesterday.
The front brake calipers were assembled and mounted on the front fork legs:
The front master brake cylinder was also assembled and mounted on the handlebar:
The rear master brake cylinder was mounted and the rear brake pedal was installed:
This is how she looks now:
As you may have noticed that all the visible bolts, nuts and screws are black, the parts that are normally chromed are also black.
These parts were all dechromed, polished and afterwards zingued black.
Only the front and rear axle were left zingued grey.
The non visible bolts and nuts were left zingued grey too.
It's becoming time to mount some electric parts, more news about those is probably for tomorrow.

Beauty Philippe! Can't wait to see the painted body work..
Re: Z 1000 ST ELR
Hi men
the past week I made some progress with the bike:
The indicators were dechromed so I could paint them black but the chrome on the inside, which acts as a reflector for the light, was gone too.
So I painted the inside with chrome paint.
Then the four indicators were assembled and mounted on the bike.
The batterybox and the main loom were installed and all the connections were cleaned and guess what: all but the flash light works.
I'll deal with that little issue in the near future. main thing is that all the lights and the ignition are working!
Last weekend I painted the exhaust. It's a Gpz1100B1 exhaust and it received a heat resistant black paint.
The exhaust mounting brackets were made out of a steel plate and cut and bent into shape. I made cardboard templates to fabricate the mounting brackets.
This morning the exhaust was mounted.
I'm pleased with the results.
After mounting the exhaust it was time to concentrate on the carbs.
They were assembled a few weeks ago but not yet synchronised .
The statical synchronisation went smooth, I only had to do it 3 times before the bores opened equally.
This afternoon the carbs were mounted on a device I've made several years ago.
It's easier to adjust the float heights when the carbs aren't mounted on the bike.
After adjustment the carbs were mounted on the bike.
Now it's time to start the body work.
The paint of fuel tank is allready stripped from the upper side, the under side will follow soon.
More to come in a few weeks.

Re: Z 1000 ST ELR
Hi men
the preparation for the paintwork started.
All the paint was stripped off from the body parts .
The fuel tank was degreased and derusted on the inside. I used the products from Restom.
The tail piece of an ST has an indentation on each side where in some countries (US and others ) a reflector is placed .
The European version received black rectangular inserts.
I decided to fil those indentations up in order to get a smooth surface.
I used parts of another tail piece that was beyond usable limits and glued them in.
Afterwards I used filler to get the surface smooth.
The front fender had two holes in it because a rubber splash guard was attached. These holes were welded and the welds were grinded and filled with putty.
The inside of the front fender received a coat of rustpreventing thick paint applied with a brush...
After a lot of grinding and filling and grinding and filling and...,the plastic parts received a colorless coat in order to get a surface where the paint adheres on.
As you can see all the plastic parts are mounted on welding rods in order to be able to reach all the areas.
This afternoon the body parts received a white base coat.
Once that coat is dry it becomes obvious where more filler must be applied.
The parts have to dry for a few days and then it'll be time to add more filler and to grind and use some more filler and grind and...
It does take a lot of work and time before I get a good surface to apply the visible paint.
As soon as there's more progress you'll be the first to know!

Re: Z 1000 ST ELR
Hi men
as promised more news about the progress.
After the base coat dried completely I could see where some more filler was needed.
It was applied and left to harden.
Once again sanding paper grit 400 was used to flatten it down.
Afterwards I noticed that there were a few more little dents visible and I applied a fery fine putty.
When that hardened I was able to sand it down and to apply a fresh coat of white base coat.
After a few days that coat was dry and hard and it was sanded with sanding paper grit 1000 in order to break the gloss and to give the other paint a good adherance.
Yesterday I started with the layout of the striping.
It took me several hours to get the striping at the correct place.
I measured the place where the blue stripe had to end and marked it with a pencil.
Then an adhesive ruban was put into place.
It marks the end of the blue stripe.
This morning the rest of the body work was covered with tin foil, only the space for the blue stripe remained open.
It's the first time I use tin foil to mask off the areas that need to be protected from paint.
It's easy to apply, you can bent and shape it and it remains at it's place.
I use tape to secure it and now and then I use compressed air to see if it stays at the correct place when I use my spraygun.
Now it was time to use some colour!
I mixed the paint myself, I had some light blue and black paint of the same manufacturor and I was able to create a very similar blue compared to the original blue I have on my Z1000R.
This afternoon, after the blue paint had dried enough to use the adhesive ruban, I started to tape it off and I sprayed the red paint.
It's "firecracker red", a leftover from the restoration of the Gpz 1100 B2 and ZX1100A2.
This is the result after removing the masking.
When the red paint is dry enough, I'll mask off the blue and red paint once again and I'll spray the gold stripe.
That's something for the next days to come.
So that's all folks!

Re: Z 1000 ST ELR
Hi guys
this morning the coloured stripes were taped off, the gold paint was prepared and sprayed on the small stripes.
After the paint dried a bit I decided to remove the tape and to see if the spraywork succeeded...
It turned out to be good. I have to do some small corrections here and there .
After a few hours I couldn't resist the temptation and decided to mount the body parts on the bike.
The paint will dry there too.
This is the result:
Once the gold paint is dry I'll tape all the colour off and give the rest of the bodywork a white colour.
When that succeeds the only thing I have to do is to give it a shiny clear coat.
But that will take some more days.

Re: Z 1000 ST ELR
Hey guys
this morning the body work received a glossy clear coat.
I took advantage of the higher temperatures to finish the paintwork.
This afternoon I started to dress the old lady...
and to get her "jewels" back on.
This is how she is now, in my opinion it's a successful face lift.
She just needs some polishing of the clear coat but that will take a few more days in order to let the clear coat become completely hard.
Then it will be time to get her engine started and see how she behaves.
She's almost ready to rock and roll !

Re: Z 1000 ST ELR
Hi men
thanks for the compliments!
Yesterday I started the engine for the first time and it rattled enormously...when the engine cooled down I opened the camshaft cover and it turned out that I had forgotten to tighten the camshaft caps of the exhaust camshaft... .
Fortunately there was no damage and after setting the bolts to the correct torcque (1,2 Kgm and NOT 1,7 as mentioned in the manual!!!)
everything was closed and installed.
When I fired the engine up this morning it ran really smooth .
Now it's time to import her into Belgium ( she comes from Holland) get an insurance and registration and then it's time to brake her in.
We'll see what she does on the road.
