Hi men

I use a two component 10 % gloss black epoxy paint (3 parts paint, 1 part hardener and 1 part cellulose thinner). The paint is from Cape . I don't think you can buy the same brand in the UK.
You could use the black satin paint from Restom for the alloy engines. After that paint is dry, you can bake the parts in an oven and then the paint is fuel and oil resistant.

Hi Mark

I don't know it by hart.
It's written on the leaflet that accompagnies the Restom paint.
I'll give you an answer tomorrow.

Hi skid mark
as promised the baking time for the paint:

when you should use the two component paint from Restom the parts need to cure a week at
20° Celcius environmental temperature.
You can also cure the paint during 1 hour in an oven at 60°Celcius.
After that the parts need to be baken in an oven during 1 hour at a temperature of 150° Celcius.
Put the parts in the oven when it's stil cold and slowly rise the temperature.
After one hour take the parts out of the oven and let them slowly cool down.
Don't touch the parts when they're hot. Not only you should burn your fingers but it would leave your fingerprints on the paint as it becomes a bit sticky when it's heated for the first time. Afterwards there's no problem, the paint stays hard.

A picture from the box with the paint, hardener and thinner included.

You can order this box in Belgium.
It's a French brand and the instruction leaflet is in French too...

Hey guys

the last few days I've made a bit of progress.
The disk rotors were stripped, taped and painted.

DSCN7129.JPG

The frame was stripped, degreased and painted

DSCN7258.JPG

The Battlax BT46 tyres arrived.
They were mounted on the wheels and the disc rotors were mounted too.

DSCN7260.JPG

For the moment I'm stripping off the paint of the major frame parts: the swingarm, the main stand and the lower triple tree.
Most of the smaller frame parts are ready to be painted.
As soon as these are sprayed I can start to rebuilt the bike.
More to come in the next episode.

Hello men

I had some amusement the last few days:

on saturday the main frame parts were stripped , the swingarm, the main stand and the lower triple tree were prepared, some more smaller parts were stripped .
on sunday I had a lot of fun together with my mates son: we assembled the engine.
After partial assembly the engine was placed into the frame after which the engine assembly continued and this is the result of a day full of fun!
DSCN7340.JPG

This morning the temperature was high enough to do some paintwork.
After degreasing and making sure I could handle the parts after spraying, the paintjob was done in less than one hour.
The parts are drying now and perhaps tomorrow I can start the assembly of the bike, we'll see how far that'll take me.

DSCN7338.JPG

During spraying I ran out of paint, nothing to worry about since I have to do some more paint stripping of other parts and I have to do another painting session. I always try to have some extra parts which are ready to be sprayed just in case I have paint left after the main goal is achieved. I almost succeded in spraying all the parts I had prepared, only the electric plate is left and will receive paint the next time.

That's all for today.
Next episode to come soon!

Hi men

did some more work during the past week.
The frame received new conical bearing shells in the headstock and the steering stem was mounted.

DSCN7370.JPG

After that, the front bevel gearcase was mounted and then it was time to mount the swing arm.

DSCN7371.JPG

I decided to mount the drive shaft first. The last time I placed the drive shaft in the swing arm and it took me a lot of time to secure the drive shaft so this time I decided to mount the drive shaft first and then the swing arm.
When mounting the drive shaft don't forget to put the tiny pin in the front bevel gear case. This little pin secures the drive shaft and prevents it from coming loose when driving.

DSCN7379.JPG

DSCN7380.JPG

Make sure that the holes in the frame, where the shafts are mounted, are clean and lubricate them with bearing grease.
Before mounting the swing arm into the frame make sure that the rubber protective cap and the clamp are mounted on the bearing housing of the front bevel gear case.
Slide the swing arm over the allready mounted drive shaft and twist the swing arm in order to get it at the correct place.
Insert both cleaned and lubricated shafts through the frame and secure the swing arm.

DSCN7372.JPG

DSCN7381.JPG

The whole procedure for mounting and adjusting the swing arm is described in the shop manual.
It's a bit complicated to explain it completely here, if you're restoring or repairing an ST, just get a manual, it's worth every penny!

Afterwards I mounted the final gear case and the rear shock absorbers.

DSCN7382.JPG

This side of the bike was ready to receive the wheel so I returned to the front of the bike.
The front fork was installed.
After the fork legs were secured they received the lamp ears and the head of the steering stem was installed.

DSCN7374.JPG

The handle bar was mounted and secured with the holder.

DSCN7378.JPG

The front wheel was mounted...

DSCN7373.JPG

... the main stand was allready mounted and the bike was standing up right!

Hi men I'm back!

The rear caliper was assembled and then it was time to mount the rear wheel.

DSCN7384.JPG

Gentlemen, the bike is standing on it's wheels !
I couldn't resist mounting other parts so I started with the rear mudguard.
Should I use the long one ...

DSCN7386.JPG

...or the shortened mudguard?

DSCN7387.JPG

Just give your opinion please, I'm waiting to decide!

So it was time to do some assembly work on the engine.
The starter engine, the breather body and the oil passage with pressure switch were mounted.

DSCN7385.JPG

Now it was time to complete the engine.
The engine covers were next.
They were painted a few weeks ago, received a glossy clear coat and baked in the oven.
This is how they look like when mounted:

DSCN7477.JPG

DSCN7479.JPG

The engine is complete and ready to receive oil!

I returned to the front of the bike.
The clocks were painted, assembled and mounted

DSCN7476.JPG

It starts to look like a bike!

Other frame parts were painted and are now waiting to be installed.
More to come soon!

Looks great. I'd go for the shorty on this and save the long one for a standard bike.

Agreed, short mudguard (if any) on an ELR rep.

Philippe, what are those RFY rear shocks like for quality ?
Have you ridden with them on the road before the resto ?
