Restoration advice help needed

#1 PostAuthor: Team G » Tue Jan 25, 2022 2:27 pm

Hi all right I've taken on my uncles 1981 gpz1100 B1 to do a sympathetic restoration and am only just starting to dig into the bike , quick bit of the back story he bought it I think new but dvla says new documents where issued in 82 but he did move house around that time so anyway things I now know about the bike, it has marzocchi strada rear shocks with a link pipe and gauge, dresda swingarm, front forks again with a link pipe and gauge, Harris formula 1 exhaust, aftermarket fairing and he did a fram chop to sit the rear up higher. Now the problems I've run into so far , all brakes seized but pads removed so it now rolls, engine now turns over freely without any problems or bad noises, ignition barrel and tank locks are dead as I've already taken them to a locksmiths and after 4 days they couldn't move them . It had a attempted theft many years ago and had the black cap snapped off which my uncle glued back on lol . I've got power to the bike as the indicators light up but don't flash, I have NO neutral light and won't start off the button but I have jumped the starter motor and it turns freely and at speed not sluggish or laboured . So here is where I need a little help / advice and guidance, I've looked for a workshop manual for the bike but am struggling to find 1 ,Sophie from Colchester kawasaki has been a great help so far and kawasaki Japan have said that if I struggle for parts they will have a look to see if they have them , they even sent me a pdf with all the parts and numbers to order . So the help / advice I need at the moment is (1) does the bike have a neutral switch and where is it located? (2) does it have a sidestand kill switch? (3) does it have a clutch kill switch as in unless the clutch is pulled in the bike won't start ? Does anyone have a full ignition barrel plus lock and black cap with wires and if so how much? Or will a B2 ignition fit as from the pdf pictures they are no way similar? I've taken a few pictures of wire where the battery sits as I have a red wire with a white stripe that doesn't seem to attach to any wire near it ? And a 2 wire block and the right side again there isn't anything I can see that connects to it? Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can give . Peace and love from Team G

Hi, 1) the neutral switch is located behind the front sprocket cover mounted on the internal engine cover. If you take off the front sprocket cover you will see a single wire from a switch.
2) the model does have a side stand switch mounted on the left hand foot rest bracket. Most have been removed.
3) no clutch switch I think over countries might have had them fitted.
4) the ignition switch has a long barrel that fits through the top yoke. Very different to B2 model. On ebay the ones listed for the b1 are wrong. Difficult to get hold of, but not impossible.
4) the odd wires are for accessories and see left disconnected.
I can send you picks of my b1, which I built last year and had similar issues with, if that helps.
Rob
Try CMSL for pictures, I managed to get a parts manual for it which proved invaluable.

if its got the original FI system still on it you'll need to do a fair bit of work on that to get it to run. I'd say the neutral light is the least of your worries.
System is very similar to the H FI system.

I've got some spare B1 FI parts.

Need photos of engine and what's under the seat to see what you've got.

Boy have you got some work to do !!

Hi Alan

make sure that all the electrical connections are clean! It's highly important because those make the bike run or not. Get a good contact cleaner and use it abundantly.
Good luck
