Z1000b ltd project Zebedee

#1 PostAuthor: Zebedee » Fri Mar 18, 2022 5:07 pm

Well ive got the frame and stripped it and removed the bearing races form the headstock and ive found a place to have it blasted and powder coated (locally in Banbury) so all I’m now waiting on is the arrival of the centre stand and a few bits so I can go ahed and have them all done at the same time (lower price). Oh yeah and the new tope yokes have arrived been ckeaned and the threads checked over and they are ready for powder coating too.

So the project is underway and pictures coming soon.

Good trip up to Doncaster at the weekend to see Paul from the club and pick up the centre stand, seat, barrels, and head , rear master cylinder, brake spring, cush drive rubbers, Chrome rack and sundry other bits.

Bit of a way to go Doncaster and slight detour at the end as the M18 was closed with not posted diversion.
But well worth it and a pleasure to meet Paul a member of the club.

More dis-assembley and some cleaning and polishing. Managed to get the shocks and swing arm off and the chain guard.
Cleaned up the triple trees and measured the thread pitch on all the bolt holes and cleaned them up and ran some fine grade grit spinge over the headstock just to clean up the red paint(?) and flatten off the dinge marke hald way up the headstock.

Started looking to drift out the swing arm bearings and clean the swing arm up, but need a blind bearing puller. So started on cleaning the swing arm and polishing the chain guard, shocks and chain adjuster.
Pics tomorrow. Annoyingly I forgot to photograph the awfulllness of the before, but afters tomorrow.

Frame and other ‘bits’ went to the powder coaters yesterday for cleaning up and coating. Should be ready in about a week.
While there I popped into the local metalwork dealers and picked up a large-ish off cut of aluminium to make some soft jaws from fro my vice. Should be able to make a set for the large vice and the small vice with any luck.

To be honest I bottled it on the swing arm as when I got it off (it had to come off to be transferred to the new frame) it was in an oily but other than that excellent condition.
Having tried to remove the bearings and only managed to get one out and that was with a fair amount of use of the gas barbecue / gas torch and the recently acquired blind bearing puller. So I’ve decided that actually the needle rollers in there are ok and don’t need to come out and the swing arm doesn’t need powder coating. So no need to subject them to being sand blasted. So now juts to fit a replacement for the one I forced out and hey ho.
The powder coat place wouldnt touch callipers or some other stuff so only the frame, the torque bar top and bottom yokes and ? What else? Got sent off.
So upshot is that I have to do some painting anyway so may as well clean and prep the swing arrm and me do that as well.

Managed to get hold of some new glass for my speedo from a member (thank you)

Also someone kindly pointed out from looking at my photos that my carbs are on in the wrong sequence (amazing) thank you.

I needed to pull the carbs in any case so they may as well go back in the correct order. I need to take them off and put them through the subsonic cleaner and make sure theyre all clena nad free from dirt. But I think ill wait for that until the frame is back and I can take them off and then transfer the engine over into the new frame.

Ive heard that its easier to bolt the engine into the frame on its side and then use the frame to right the engine?

Anyway I guess Ill need to move the old frame and engine over to the bench I’ve made and drop it out of the frame there?

Oh I did manage to get some 1000 barrels, pistons and a head at the weekend so will need to get some 1000 rings to fit and will be doing cam chain/ tensioner top roller etc , so may take that lot off firts to make the transfer lighter?

Wish me luck.

Here is the swing arm bearing I did get off/out.

Recalcitrant little chap and he was as hard as nails too. On inspection there was nothing wrong with him so Ive decided to leave the others in situ and only replace this one.

Today was supposed to be about building a rack in the garage and bolting the big vice to the bench, but I took a dislike to the way the carbs were sat and as it lightens the load when swapping the engine over to the other frame, I took them off.

What a mess
