Northern Ireland used to have its own DVA IN Coleraine they closed it a few years ago and amalgamated everything with Swansea so it’s possible if the bike had been off the road for a prolonged period paper records could have got lost. Back then there was a paper “import” exercise which just entailed filling in a form if you were bring a bike onto their system here from the DVLA in the UK and probably vice versa. Either way they should really have had a record of it. VOI would be 1981 or 1982 at a guess, and it would definitely be a Belfast reg. that wouldn’t be unusual here for some reason a lot of Kawasakis seem to have sat in the shop for a while my 77 Z1000 was first reg in 78 (ROI) and I know of a quite a few others the same at least two 1972 triples 1973 reg.

Good news at last!
DVLA has found partial record and issued V5 - AND kept original registration number.
So ran out and got insured, ready for the road - oh wait, winter is just starting.. never mind

Done some more painting myself - tank, engine (polished rocker cover, top crank), switchgear, so it's road ready really BUT... on the few occasions I've had it out, I've noticed it getting rougher after 5 miles or so, to the point of it cutting out. Leave it for 10 mins and its fine again, for 5 miles or so.
I got new high performance coils (HT leads integral to them) and spark plugs, but just checked the points. Was thinking points/condenser may be culprit and was think of electronic ignition anyway, which hopefully would resolve issue. Certainly seems electronic/ignition related so only other thing could be alternator side.
I've seen electronic ignition kits on ebay. 2 versions at about £185 and two versions about £45 (Chinese). Anyone have any experience of this or other ideas/advice? or perhaps alternative sources for such a conversion - e.g specialist Z shops with discount from this site/ Z Forum - e.g do the bigger Z standard electronic ignitions fit?

Hi Bro
this symptom of running fine for a few miles then stopping , then after a while running for a few miles then stopping again is classic for a blocked fuel tank breather.
open the fuel tank cap/lid and look for a pinhole in the lid or a tiny air channel past the rubber seal on the lid- if its blocked by debris or rust then as fuel gets used, a vacuum develops in the air space above the fuel, which eventually sucks against the fuel's gravity feed to the carbs, starving the carbs.
should be an easy fix. Hopefully.

Also a symptom of a inline fuel filter fitted with the wrong flow direction.

Thanks - I did fit an inline filter altho' it doesn't have a direction arrow on it, so I'll look into that too!

Inlet fills the outer chamber, outlet is taken from the inner chamber after it has gone through the filter element.

Yes it was on the wrong way and a bit clogged.
However maybe not enough to stop flow. You tube search suggests
can fit eaither way but reason to do correct way is mainly so you can see the build up of debris. Anyway away to get new one and fit.
Of more concern is grays comment re tank cap. May be an issue there.
Will need to check my emanual to check fitting order and clean

Fuel supply is too slow if fitted feeding into the inner chamber and slows further as it fills with crud.

the lid and the parts looks not bad - air comes in the keyhole, through the barrel, into the channel cast in the lid that goes from 7 o'clock on your picture, clockwise to 5 o'clock to the slot in the casting leading outwards, thru one of the holes in the 1st gasket, round the channel cast in the top ring in the pile , thru the hole in the 2nd gasket and then onward to the interior of the tank ( can't see a channel in the bottom round metal ring) Difficult to tell without the parts in hand.
The air takes a long path, but the path looks pretty open as far as I can see. But if the holes don't line up when you reassemble, the problem will persist.

I'll post update in the spring when first ridden again to confirm fix, but I'm almost 100% sure it was the petrol cap breather. There's a small hole there and I think I had put the rubber cap washer in on the wrong side so that the spring would not open enough to allow the breather hole to be exposed. My 1948 tractor has the same in line fuel filter on it (also wrong way round), but it's been running fine for the last few years. Agreed the fuel filter should be the right way round tho for optimal performance, which wouldnt be notice in a tractor much!
