Hello men

thanks for all the replies and the compliments!
Tomorrow will be D Day! I'll fire her up! You'll be the first to know how she's running.

Hello gentlemen

this morning the first attempt to start her up after more than 35 years.
A fresh, brand new battery was installed and a few litres of fuel was poured in the tank.
The key was turned, there was light!
The fuel tap was set on "Prime" and I waited a bit so that the carbs received some fuel.
The choke was pulled, the clutch actuated and the starter button was pushed...
The starter engine did what it was supposed to do and the engine was running ...only on two cylinders. :(

What was wrong? Before the installation of the coils I had measured the resistance of both the primary and secondary windings and the readings were OK.
The fuel tank was taken off, the wiring inspected...all was good.
I took off the cap of the first cylinder and putted a spare spark plug in it.
When I attempted to fire the engine up there was NO spark...
I turned my attention to the points.
The left one, which provides the current to the left coil (cylinders 1 and 4) seemed OK.
On closer inspection of the wire I noticed that one lead was touching the plate where the points are mounted on.
It must have happened when fastening the little bolt and nut.
With the blade of a screwdriver I forced the lead away from the plate and gave it another try...

SUCCESS !!!!

The engine was running smooth on four cylinders! She was alive and kicking!
After a few minutes the revs were stable at approx.1200 Rpm and I lowered them with the idler screw to a nice 1000 Rpm.
Then it was time to check the ignition point with the strobe light.
1 and 4 were firing at the F mark, 2 and 3 needed a little adjustment and after adjustment the revs were set back to a nice 1000Rpm.

Mission accomplished!
Another one saved from the scrap yard!!!

I only have to make sure that she gets a registration plate, an insurance and an MOT...yes since this year bikes need an MOT in Belgium when they're newly registered. After that they don't need it any more... the EU nonsence did it again or is it the Belgian sense of logic?

I'm waiting for more than one month now to receive a little VIN plate to attach to the bike
Since some point in the eighties, new imported bikes got such a plate, they never had it before but now they need it. Why? I don't know.
Oh yes perhaps I do know it: such a little VIN plate adds alot to the security on the road.
It's a strange world. :biggrin

So that's all for this topic folks.
Perhaps some more news when I discover "bugs" while riding the bike. We'll see...

Hi Philippe,

That has been an epic whirlwind restoration and it’s been a great read. I’m really pleased it runs well and it’s very rewarding once it’s all done.

I don’t know where you store all these bikes after restoration but it must be a big space!

Looking forward to progress on the H!

Regards

Pete.
