Z1B (no 2) on the West coast.
Redemption is the key word for my three Z1b projects. They have had a colourful past life and im trying to bring them back from the edge, they will never be 100% stock and OEM but one will get fairly close, probably closer than the second. Bike two will be a stock build to a point.. the frame is an Ebay purchase "slightly molested" as is the engine case and the rest well from various places. Bike three will be a close to stock but will veer off to a theme.... and the theme is "early Yoshimura race bike" in the Japanese style of building. But.. back to bike two, its been a bit of work to return the frame to stock from what you see below.
Frame was braced but in a way that the tank wouldn't fit on any more, so that all had to be redone.

So then it was the turn signal ears and the exhaust hangers and a few well purposed welds to strengthen the frame.

Relocating the bracing on the backbone and the tank fits now.

Wee mockup to see if everything fits.
I got a set of Z1 junker stock pipes off ebay for under a hundred bucks to make sure everything fit.

That’s looking good and you’re moving on at a pace!
Is this yellow framed one going to be bike number 1, the nearer to standard one?

Thanks mate! This one will be back to stock, the frame now has all the fittings in tact, the only fly in the ointment is that the frame and engine numbers are about 2500 apart and having to brace the frame to insure its strength. Everything that is done to the frame will be well hidden and in the final paint will be barely noticeable. Repo stock exhaust, all the stock chrome in wheels (repo) , mudguards, all original bodywork, and as for the rest a few iv found original others aftermarket. It will look the part but on close inspection it will be about a 1/5 aftermarket parts. Iv been hunting parts for this bike for 3 years, that was the hard part.
Edit. the swing arm and complete rear end will be stock.

Hi Z1streetfighter71
wow that's a rebuild!!!
It's magnificent to see that other people also restore a bike that's almost considered by others as lost!
You do have a challenge mate and you're dealing with it in a great way.
Keep the pictures coming, I'm following this one with interest.
You let the good times roll again for this bike.

Thanks Philippe, I think you and me share the same philosophy in when we see a beaten up, un-loved, rusted out bike we think "how will i get that sorted" and not "can that be sorted" ill post the next stage of the frame fix tomorrow as im still working on it, be safe mate.

Scored a z1 swing arm finally..took about 3 weeks to get from the States. Had some kind of railing welded to it but a few hours later its all good, quick spray of etch primer to keep it from rusting again.

Re: Z1B's on the West coast.
So were i stand right now.. 2 steps forward 1 step back, the frame was powder coated but only after it was done did i see that the backbone tube had been thinned out at the sides, couldn't let this go so did bicycle style strengthening gusset and bracing. I have my Z1b fork stem and forks, tubes brand new. Frame will be made ready for 2k paint and time to sort out the wheels in the week or 2 ahead.

Hi Z1streetfighter71
you're doing a great job!
It's not always easy to correct the changes some people did in the past but you have great solutions!
