I decided at the start of the year to finally amalgamate some of the bits I had accumulated into something resembling a motorbike.
The idea was for an aircooled trackday bike.
Thought I would share a few pics.
Started out with a frame and had a Zx6r wheels swing arm grafted onto it along with zzr forks and yokes.
The idea was to keep z650 dimensions and standard frame and squeeze in a different engine I had from our good friend Jack (rip) a while ago. We know its a good motor as we ran it at spa a couple of years back.
I set the shock mounts to take 350mm z1 shocks as I had some already. We also set the ride height to mimic the standard 650.
Note I had also removed the bottom engine mounts as they clash with the motor.
Just to make sure we trial fitted a fully built one as well.

Along with some other trial bits and pieces before we started on the frame mods.
We then braced the frame and re-added lower mounts for the engine and mounting points for rearsets.
Frame was then powder coated[
Note lower mounts added into frame rails to support engine lower mount. ( i have seen people not bother with these when fitting these engines in z frames but I wanted them fitted if possible )

Re: Z650 project
Then it was time to get paintng stuff ready.
Then do some rebuild fitting of stuff
So the final spec is
Zx6r
Wheels
Swing arm
Zzr forks 43mm
Zxr750 calipers and front disk
Zx7r rearsets
Exhaust craft “ Harris” stainless
Ohlins 350mm z1000 shocks
Zx12r master cylinder.
1170 flowed motor
33mm smoothbores
Ytx9bs battery
Dyna leads coils and dyna ‘s ignition
Zxr400 tacho and lights.
Modded ally tacho and number plate holder
530 chain conversion.
Turned out quite well really imho.

Re: Z650 project
I have been out on it and it feels good handles ok, but needs a new reg rec, ( which was no surprise).
Feels a bit of a beast, and hopefully taking it cadwell cbt at the weekend.

Great report and good looking bike, hope it goes as well as it looks!
Re: Z650 project
I did Cadwell park Saturday and the bike ran great, handles well and goes great, better than the rider
I forgot how physical these aircooled bikes are to muscle around.
Could’nt catch Crosby on his though!

Re: Z650 project
I think you did a great job Phil. If i had built something fresh there is no way i would have taken it straight out on track and thrashed it, particularly Cadwell which is a high tarrif circuit if something isnt just right!
How was it with no back brake by the way?
Didnt see you stop trying though.

Thanks Gents,
Al back brakes are over rated
