Hi everyone
So I’ve had this 1978 Z1000 ltd in my shed for about 10 years now, and finally fancy doing something with it. What I fancy is building something that looks like a Z1-A........ Now I appreciate it will never stand up to close scrutiny, but hopefully it will end up looking something like the bike I always wanted. My quandary is, should I or not? Is it feasible? Should I leave it standard?
Any advice welcome guys

Welcome to the forum,had a ltd made as a look alike meself once.in my opinion too many have been done now and made the Ltd in standard form a pretty rare bike,i would restore as it is intended to be...

Hi from Sherborne - Z1000LTD (B3/4) can easily be made to look similar to a Z900 - can even swap to round cam covers.... see you around!

My ltd already has the round cam covers and loops for the pillion footrests too. Trouble is it has those flippin lester wheels in it. Are wire conversions to be had anywhere

wellcome to the forum! Put some pictures of your bike on here so we can enjoy them.
Keep your Ltd as she is, don't change her. The frame number will reveal she's a Ltd but she will look like something else.
If you want a Z1A, find one, keep your Ltd and enjoy both of them!

I’m having a senior moment trying to get some photos up.....they will make it up eventually. I would love to have the ltd & a Z1, but I reckon the divorce would be too costly. Just been into the shed to take some snaps and according to the speedo ( and old mots) it’s done less than 10k too

Hello and welcome from sunny Bournemouth. Good base to start from. It’s your bike so do whatever you wish to.
If you like the Z1A paint scheme go for it. If you swap to wire wheels you will need to get rear wheel complete with sprocket carrier and spacers for the rear wheel.

thanks for the pics! She doesn't look too bad! Get the dust and the cobwebs off, clean up the chrome bits, put a new horn, tires and intake rubbers on, change the fork oil, engine oil and the brake fluid and get it on the road again. She'll need a new battery and a tuning to perform well. Please don't let her rust away. Since there's only 10.000 miles on the clocks, go for it and enjoy!

Okay..... decision made, it’s gonna be a mongrel Z1a look a like. Strip down started, but here’s a question for you
Will a replica body kit fit straight on or do I need to modify the mounting points????
1 I’m too tight to buy the kit before I know
2 I don’t really wanna chop stuff about unless I have to, preferring to have it reversible if ltd prices skyrocket (ho ho)

Z1, Z1A, Z1B tanks fit straight on Z900 and Z1000. Unsure about the Ltd models ?

If you want to fit Z1A side covers on the bike.

- You will have to change the rear engine top mount brackets.
- Also the rear of left hand side panel may not fit around the seat lock - may have to trim slightly.
- You will need to make up a bracket to take top rear lug for the right hand side panel.

Can’t you get your existing tank and side panels sprayed in Z1A colours ?

Adrian, thanks for the info. Maybe a respray could be a better option..... at least they would fit. I was under the impression though that the ltd tank was smaller than a standard one.

I am not sure about the tank swap on the Z1000 Ltd. Top rails of frame on the Z1000 ltd may be slightly raised ?

Fuel tank size does vary
Z1 - Z1B - 18 litre fuel tank
Z900 - 18 litre fuel tank
Z1000A1- A2 1978 - 16.7 litres fuel tank
Z1000 LTD (B1) - 13.5 litres fuel tank
