Hello from sleepy Suffolk

Hi all. Currently looking at a 1980 z1000st. It's a bit of a rat/survival machine and far from standard. Having said that it is sound and solid. What are the main issues to look for, problems that arise etc. It may have the 1075 big bore kit on it and it certainly goes like a scalded cat so not unhappy with that. Carbs weeping slightly and the tank seems to leak a bit but it's on the seam rather than rust. It's chopped up a bit but would suit me.
Thanks in advance

Hi Futter
Welcome to the club!
If it's an ST just go for it! Give it fuel in the tank, oil in the engine and air in the tires and ride it.
Beware, it's heavy and powerful !
Show us some pictures, we all like them .
I'm an ST fan too and have five of them in my collection, I know them inside and out so if you have any questons, just ask!
Greetings from Belgium
Philippe

Hi Futter
JC that's a monster! The rear section of the frame has been chopped off and replaced by something else!
Can you get it MOT'ed ? If not, don't buy it.
But if you like it, go for it. It's not my piece of cake and I would never ride such a Mad Max bike .
Does it handle well at higher speeds? Think about your safety!

That's the thing with rat bikes..... They look like they do but are totally legal. The exhaust came from a z1 engined Harris and the plate is side mounted on the left. Other than what I mentioned my only other concern is the electrics. The headlights seem really poor and I will get a more original headlight but is the charging system a weakness on these bikes?
Oh and as of next year it will be tax and not exempt.

It handles ok. The geometry hasn't changed, just the riding position. I found it heavy in the corners as well.

Most zeds are heavy in the corners. Headlights are generally poor on these 1970's bikes, but you have got some spot lights as well.
Charging system is generally up to the job, if you may want to fit a combined regulator / rectifier, (
www.electrexworld.co.uk sell them).

Also, what's the best way to upgrade the brakes? It's fitted with braided hose but would different calipers help? If so which ones?

hello Futter
Suffolk won't be quite as sleepy if you buy that. Great bike.
