Do they all do it?

#1 PostAuthor: andyb1962 » Mon Jan 02, 2012 7:42 pm

Tidied up the garage to day so had to move my bike.
I fired it up started second prod! :D

I then need to move it. Engaged the clutch selected first gear and CLUNK!
very loud as the gear engaged.
However no grinding or more mysterious noises and i moved the bike etc.
i didnt notice the clutch dragging.

So my dilemma is this. was the loud clunk as I engaged first gear normal.
Was it because the bike had been stood a while (10 days since fired up and much longer since gears were selected.) everything is cold.

Or more likely is it the 'echo' of the garage and me being hyper critical
Andy

Think yourself lucky, did the same thing but my clutch plates seem to have welded themselves together. A good tip from Hobbo is to keep the clutch lever in using a cable-tie if bike is sat for a long time.

If my bike's been stood for a while I usually run the engine for a bit, to warm the oil up, then stop the engine, put it in gear & gentley rock it forwards & backwards (with the clutch lever pulled in) until the clutch frees off. You don't get such a loud CLUNK then :D

Since I started using Motul 5100 10W40 semi-synthetic oil the clutch doesn't drag/stick half as much as it used to when I used BP Viscostatic 20W50 oil.

Yup...used to get embarassed at red lights, so often held the clutch in & kept it in gear.

Some were worse than others.
