Comp test - was engine HOT or COLD?

Going by those figures assume hot...... either way, sound good & well within spec.
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Piggy, stone cold. I was just worried on the variability mainly, but probably over thinking?

All within 10% in either direction so apparently all good.
Youre situation exactly mimics' mine with lower comp in 2 and 3. You could expect the figure to rise slightly as it beds in but it will also fall off fairly rapidly if you are on the throttle for long periods over many miles. On 4 consecutive winters i have re-freshed the top end with new rings and never achieved better than you have there by much. 180 i think is my best for 1 and 4 but 2 and 3 fall more quickly than 1 and 4 because the rings are subject to more heating and wiseco rings, from what i have seen over the last 6 or 7 years, dont seem to like being heated too much!
In desperation i eventually took my barrels and pistons to a bike re-bore specialist (top man in his field) who told me they had been re-bored incorrectly after he measured them. He also measured the pistons and recommended swapping 3 and 4 if i remember correctly! That was his considered opinion and takes no account of the fact that seizing or pick-up of the middle pair is a significant risk if used in anger. I will leave you to figure which one it is. I also had three identical matching pistons and one which was completely different by a significant amount when i weighed them with a digital scale but that is another story.
With regard to the video you posted its difficult to say what it is but heres' a few guesses; leak at header pipe, blow at head gasket, my personal favourite ~ the wire holder clip in the alternator cover rubbing on the rotor but i am going to go for miss-firing plug / shorting cap / spark leak at HT lead or coil on the basis that it sound like its running on 3!
The base of the wire holder clip needs to be behind the two raised nipples which are cast into the casing. You should be able to tell if its been rubbing because it polishes the outer edge of the rotor. Because of the compression figures you quoted i doubt its a leak at the head gasket but because of the speed of the ticking; spark plus wasted spark at that engine speed i think you may have an electrical problem.

Al, sound advice as always! I hadn't actually considered it being the spark that was causing the ticking. It sounds like it could be the perpetrator indeed. Headers are tight, that's what I originally thought it was and like you say compression is good so unlikely head gasket. I'll mess with the spark first.

I fitted mini dyna could with carbon leads and I wasn't very impressed by the spark to be honest when I tested them, it looked pretty weak. Those carbon leads have a huge resistance which I couldn't figure out how it would work. I'll play about with the leads tomorrow and check each plug.

Repaired one of mine this week with my stud design, all done while still on the engine, slow process but completed today.
