A4 spoked rear wheel hub

I bought some wheels off a club member and decided that the rear was too rusty so striped it, had the hub vapour blasted, polished the outside bit of the hub, got Mikey to polish the brake plate, bought stainless rim and spokes and new wheel bearings having skipped the originals as a matter of course. Went to fit the wheel bearings and they were too big by some margin, so bought another set from a different supplier and they were too big as well. Checked the bearing sizes in the Kawasaki parts book and sure enough the supplied bearings are correct.

Any ideas? I don't think that there's enough meat to bore the hub out to fit the bearings and presumably spindle that fits the smaller bearings will be too small for the niner

Is it a kwak hub?
do you know what model it's supposed to be off? (I know you've put A4, but I've got an almost identical hunda on one of mine) I can compare some different ones tomorrow if that helps.

Thanks Freddy. I was sold it as being for a Zed. The hubs for the Z1, Z1A, Z1B and Z900A4 are all the same, though there are 3 different types of brake plates and the wheel bearings are all 6304Z. I am beginning to wonder if it was for a triple or ....?

Rightly or wrongly I am of the understanding that the H hubs were the same as the 900's

That is a H2 hub Ralph you can tell by the fact the cush drive holes are central. Z1 Z900 ones are offset. I only know this as I have spent the last three days trying to sort my carrier andrew it turns out it's a H2 one that will fit my Z1A hub but needs a smaller spacer collar. The standard 42mm one is too long. This was also sold to me by a fellow member as a Z1A carrier.

I got the one Ralph now has, from a member (bought as a Z900 wheel) but never got round to using it.

If you want to keep that hub you will need to make spacers, so the width of the bearing doesn't matter - there is a 20mm ID 14mm width 47mm OD bearing - 6204. Looks like that hub may be 47mm but you'd need to measure more accurately, there is no such thing as a 46mm OD metric bearing.

The 6304 is 20mm ID 15mm wide and 52mmOD.

Obviously, the inner spacer between the wheel bearings will be the same, because the inner face of the bearings sits in the same place.

The sprocket carrier bearing to left hub bearing will be different, and if the issue exists on the brake plate side you will need a spacer there too, but with a small lathe that is all pretty simple.

SO the hub will be OK I just need to dig around and find some bearings and spin up some spacers on the lathing machine. I can't lace up the rims til I've got some bearings

You don't need the spacers to lace it up, just the bearings, they can go in the hub, the inner spacer will still be correct, it's only to fit the sprocket carrier and brake plate to the hub and the whole assembly to the bike that spacers will need to be custom made..

I sold my Harrison M300 to a friend for lack of space, a decision I regret every day, what a lovely piece of kit. It was made sweeter by the fact that when I got it I collected it from a hospital workshop and they paid me to take it away!!!

The only saving grace is my friend has spent £1000s on tooling and part of the deal was I have access to it whenever I want.

Now just have a little lathe at home.

No offence taken, just my strange way

For many years I only had a little chinese job, which I did a lot of work on, but you can't beat a bigger small lathe. The M300 is beautifully built. I wish I had room for a Bridgeport to go with it. When I next have a few quid I'll get a bigger one than the X3 I currently have, but I don't have room for a proper one. The lathe doesn't take up too much room, but a man size mill has a big footprint .

This has turned into a bit of a marathon! The spacer between the wheel bearings needed to be bored to 20mm. I laced up the rim today, but the stainless rim I bought from CWC isn't particularly true especially where it is welded. I won't be buying another of those any time soon I was about to put the brake plate back together and then realised that has a 17mm hole in it. Bollocks. couldn't get it to chuck in the three jaw, so had to use my gurt big four jaw. Clocking it in was pain in the arse because it has three little cut outs in the spindle hole just where I needed to get the DTI. Got there eventually and machined it out. The spacer that holds the sprocket drive at the correct place I have wasn't quite right, so I have to machine a new one. Figuring out the dimensions is proving tricky, but I guess I'll get there eventually
