Rear Hub Refurb - Is this possible?

Hi all - just started getting to grips with a rescue on my 1977 Z1000A1. The frame is at the powder coaters and I have sent a load of kit off for chrome and zinc plating. Next job is to sort out some of the alloy bits for vapour blasting.

The hubs really need it as they are a complete furred up mess - the rims are stainless and in very good order, and the spokes are pretty good, again stainless but will need dressing at the nipple end as they have been crudely ground off.

The problem is my rear hub flange on the non drive side. It was chrome plated steel - it's now flaking like a poor imitation of a burnt croissant.





I'm guessing the flange is pressed onto the alloy hub. Can it be replaced? does anyone have one or am I going to have to find a another hub? It would be good to be able to use the original hub if I can - I would welcome all comments and suggestions. Many thanks.

Those hubs are somewhat scarce because they always used to rot, sometimes even on bikes a couple of years old...

I am pretty sure that you cannot remove that piece ,but my suggestion would be to, after getting it blasted and cleaned,is to get that section powder coated chrome .i have seen some amazing results .A friend used Triple S to do some bits and they looked excellent .

Thanks guys, it has gone too far to be 'dressed up' I was hoping that someone had an engineering solution, pehaps a new flange that could be pressed or welded on. Looks like its going to have to be a new hub.

Does anyone know how the steel flange is attached to the alloy hub? I'm pretty sure that I can get a new steel flange machined up probably do it in stainless, but I need to get the old one off. Obviously I don't want to attack it with a press if there is a machine thread under it all. Has anyone got a totally trollied rear hub that I can practice with?

If it was mine, I would get it vapour blasted. Then you can see just what condition the steel and ally is really in
