I think that I'm beginning to get my head around this colour thing now. If I read it right the vagaries of paint and paint processes during the 70's led to a variety of shade and colour hues that make it impossible to have a single CORRECT colour.

In my instance I want to return the bike to the Blue that is on the V5 so I need a car colour that is as close as acceptable to pass as original. Anybody seen a car and thought 'that's the colour of my bike?' I just need a starting point for my spray guy - I'm confident he will make it look good I just don't want it to be miles out.

I am going to get the panels to him next week - if anyone had a hi-res pic of the blue colour on a tank with pin striping in place like Gary's wine red one that would be ace.

On another topic I rang OSMC about a stainless 4-2 OEM look system which the chap said he could do when he gets a set of front pipes in to use as a pattern. Chuffed with that.

By Blue I assume you mean the Bluey blue that looks green (ish) with atouch of blue green thrown in for good measure! (Same as mine). Are you painting it yourself or getting it done? If you want to colour match mine I can take it to the guys who are just down the road from me who supply RS Paints. Do you want water based or cellulose? If you want cellulose you can only buy 1lt at a time and you have to state its for a vintage vehicle or they cant sell it to you. EU trying to save the world from the perils of cellulose paint apparently, its not like there's enough to worry about with North Korea and Trump and IS and .......
Anyway the paint suppliers are:-
GB Refinish supplies Ltd.
Quadrant Ct,
Dartford,
Greenhithe
KENT
DA9 9AY
Phone: 01322 62447

I can always take a panel in to match and let you know the codes to buy.

Or you could just paint it a blue colour you like it's your bike. I never liked that greeny colour. My bike also went through light blue metal flake phase during the eighties and nineties it's been this colour since mid 2000 I get still quite a lot of people saying they like it

Kawasaki only list Diamond Sky Blue and Diamond Wine red as colours for the A1.

My old Thou in her blue outfit which I believe was painted by Hutch of this forum. The guy I use for paint also colour matched another blue A1 from one of my panels. The paint is a very close match to a BMW blue.... apparently.

Not entirely sure just how close to OEM my colour is but pretty close I believe. Gotta say I too prefer your blue from a aesthetic stand but as my bike is as standard as a standard thing it would be almost criminal to change it.
Maybe i need a spare paint set :idea

Thanks guys - as much as I like the royal blue I reckon it's got to be the bluey blue that looks green with a blue tinge of green. Given that all the pics look bloody ace and I would be chuffed with any of them I am happy that close enough is close enough.

I won't be spraying the bike I will leave that to Justin from Mark Skinner Autobodies - he has always done a great job on my previous bikes - it will be a base coat and clear and I might get a little extra sparkle thrown in.

The pics help with the pin striping as well Gold - thick outside, thin inside.

The paint is going to be the easy bit - I was playing with the wiring loom tonight - that looks like hours of fun

Got a long weekend now so will sort out my first batches of vapour blasting, chrome and zincing and powder coating. Probably best to start a new post under projects now.

The BMW paint mentioned is probably Midnight Blue code B38 I got some for my daughters car, if it is, I wouldn't say it was spot on but it would be a good starting point I would think the green element would have to be upped slightly, from memory the green may have been 8grms in the standard mix not sure on that.
The thick stripe is 3mm and the thin one is fractionally under 2mm and they are 6mm apart.
I've just tried to put a couple of pictures up but failed miserably!

as for paint why not get your paint guy to do a few vaiant samples of the colour on spray out cards but make sure there lacquered as the clear coat can darken the colur a tad .
if you can get some paint codes that are close to what you want. it can be tweaked from there with the painters colour scheme.
Personally i would go down the water based route, as almost every paintshop sceheme is water based. And it would make it easier to get a s.m.a.r.t repair done to any stone chip/scratch you may get in the future.

csx355 wrote:Hi all - long post here so my apologies in advance. Some time ago I acquired a stripped Z1000a. It was a bike that I had seen complete albeit rough quite a few years ago in someones back garden. The frame number is KZ00A-026433 and it is now registered in my name on a 'S' 77/78 plate - I believe it to be a genuine UK bike. I was not sure whether to sell it as is or have a bash at a little (sic) resto. I think that now I would like to have a go.

How did you get on with your rebuild?

Hi Guy - thanks for checking it out - It's been fun 95 % finished now and, typically (for me) sidetracked by other projects. Pretty sure that I'm going to move her on now.

Oh really, be good to see pictures before it goes, also let me know if you have any parts left over, the main reason I was interested is I have one too and the same red as your images (at the start of your project). That's what caught my eye in the first place. Also share any issues you had finding parts, or during your build.

Look forward to the pictures, did you keep it the same colour in the end?

Guy.

Hiya as people have said, A1in the UK only red or blue, Diamond sky blue is a two coat Jobbie , the base coat being terracotta of all things, company called Lerchler make it and their code is kaw27 I believe... my side panel is a mile out compared to the rest of the bike so looking for a repaint myself ...quite a few people on here have used a chap called Hutch who apparently does a cracking job...

My diamond sky blue which often looks green
