Been cleaning the rear end and frame up. All painstaking work but worth the effort.
Pretty much ready to clean up the rear of the engine and centre stand next.

Made a start on cleaning up the engine today.

Not bad behind here, but looks like it has never been cleaned as the chain gunk was solid...
Image

Image

Bit of grot.
Image

Not much left of the rear to do.
Image

Not bad after the first pass!
Image

Clutch side came up well.
Image

And the rear is now clean. (Lower frame area still to do).
Image

Couldn't be bothered to remove the front sprocket to get the chain off and clean behind it. The grot behind the sprocket will annoy me, so I'll probably end up taking if off later to get that out.

Needed to clean up and check the rear drive hub, took a bit of effort with the sprocket fitted.

More dried up grease...
Image

Cleaned up reasonably well, however, I decided that the as the sprocket is starting to get a bit hooked and the drive chain is near the stretch limit , I'd best replace them.
Image

Great news, I have a new set of sprockets (correct Euro spec. of 15 front and 33 rear) and a nice O-ring chain in my stash!
Image

I need to order the front and rear sprocket tab washers to fit the new chain and sprockets, so decided to refit the rear wheel for now.
Image

I ordered some aftermarket air filters from M&P and they sent me the wrong ones (for a z1000). Had some hassle with getting them to take them back, but it's in hand now.
However, managed to pick up a 'NOS', boxed K&N filter for £10 on EBay though.

Next job is to get the front end off and check the front wheel and head stock bearings as I'm sure the grease will be dried up.

Been pretty busy riding bikes instead of fettling them, so not much progress.
However, I did remove the cam cover and measure the valve clearances.
5 are spot on middle of range at .06 to .07mm and I have 3 that are .1 to .11mm. So I'll need to swap out the shims on those ones.

As expected the top end is mega clean.

Cam damper rubbers on cam sprockets have virtually no wear. :D

Not done much for a while as I have been away on holiday and had to fettle a couple of bikes I had decided to sell.
Changed a couple of shims as per my earlier valve clearance check. All now within spec.
Then started to replace the chain and sprockets.

As per my earlier post it was a bit grotty behind the front sprocket, so I cleaned all that up. A very small amount of chain damage to the lower part of the casing.
Image

New sprocket and lock nut in place.
Image

Decided to use to some Kawasaki locknuts on the sprocket as opposed to the usual tabs. I know it's not original, but I prefer the looks and re-usability and I had some to hand.
Image

Ready to fit the chain, but found that it's 2 links too long. This is because it's a USA spec. chain for the 35 tooth rear sprocket and I'm using Euro spec. 33 tooth one. So, I'll cut a couple of links out this weekend.
Image

I need to get my arse in gear and get the carbs vapour blasted...

Nice full day in the workshop yesterday, although I did struggle a bit as my sciatica has flared up...

Took the carbs bodies and brackets and the cam cover to FJ Aquablasting in Skelmersdale a few days ago.

Took two links out of the new chain (to match the 33 tooth rear sprocket) and got that fitted along with the rear mudguard assembly.
Image

Rermoved the front wheel to check it over and give it a clean up.
Image

Image

More dried up grease. Gave it all a repack with fresh stuff.
Image

Cleaned up all the chrome bits, came up nicely with Quick-Glo Fine formula.
Image

Looking at the wiring behind the headlight, I see some additional wiring (blue) which doesn't go anywhere (ends cut off).
Looks like it's a fused live feed and earth which may have powered something at some point. I removed it all.
At least it was added in a way which hasn't butchered or altered the original wiring and connectors..
Image

Steering head bearings were notchy, so decided to take a look.
Image

Dried up grease. Everything looked OK so I re-greased and reassmebled, however, still nothcy. Closer inspection with my glasses on shows some slight indentations.
So, I'll need to fit some replacement bearings - I have a taper set I can use.
