Float bowl pivot pins
I have just got a set of 28mm mikuni’s for my Z1B, they were gummed up solid, I have got the sliders moving freely, the floats were gummed up and wouldn’t move, with carb cleaner and acf50 I got them moving fairly well.
I remember reading a post a year or so back about someone breaking off the post that the float pivot is located in, I really don’t want to risk doing the same to my carbs. Does anyone have a method of getting these pins out safely.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Jon

Re: Float bowl pivot pins
Use a spring loaded centre punch to push them out, sometimes called an automatic centre punch.

Re: Float bowl pivot pins
I've used a pin-punch and gentle to moderate taps with a small hammer. Maybe a bit of heat to encourage them to 'unstick' and / or a penetrating oil soaking. If they are well and truly stuck together you may need to get more forceful but always bear in mind that the alloy posts are a little fragile.

It wouldnt be a bad idea to fabricate a pin press that supports behind one of the posts with a g clamp type open claw!

Re: Float bowl pivot pins
Last set I did just used a very small drill bit and pushed them out. Maybe I was lucky they just fell out. If using force you will need to support rear of nearest post which you are pushing against. Use a centre punch slightly smaller than retaining pin.

They have always come out fairly easily for me once you figure out which end to drive from. Correct me if I’m wrong chaps but they are tapered on these carbs so they’ll only go back in one way round (?).
Boiling carbs in a 50/50 mix of lemon juice and water is remarkably effective at dissolving that brown gum if its really glued up. You could soak the pin holes in lemon juice (sounds a bit bizarre I know but it won’t do any harm if it doesn’t work) to see if it gets rid of any gum hiding in the holes. Heat is also your friend, though I’d be very gentle with it in a location like that.

I don’t think it was ever going to be used for anything more useful.
