Hi folks,
I'm going to remove the A4's carbs in the coming weeks as fuel has been leaking for a while which looks more like a dirty golden syrup under the float bowls - I think it's coming from perished O-rings in the drain screws but any common areas to look out for?
Anything to be aware of before I start?

Just check the drain screw o rings before taking the carbs off. If it is leaking from the drain screws then taking the carbs off is a little excessive. Orange / golden syrup is evaporated modern fuel.
Short term fix if its o rings is a smear of silicon gasket goo around them before screwing back in. Leave over night to set before turning the tap on.

Thanks, got the O-rings, but the carbs they're looking pretty grubby so a decent degrease will do them good - just wondered if there was anything to be mindful of when taking them off.

Hardest bit is setting cables to the correct tension on re instalation which is eay to do. If your striping them down for a clean just ensure you keep the bits together for each carb.

Esso super premium unleaded petrol (97 + octane) does not contain ethanol, BP possibly not also. See their sites for more info. i tested the Esso fuel and no ethanol was there. Ethanol is what causes the problems on seals and sticky deposits. There is no legal requirement to add 5% ethanol to 97+ octane petrol.

In my experience, if they exhibiting goop on the outside then it's worth taking them off and looking in the float bowls to see if they need a clean. Use new float bowl gaskets, I recommend the Keyster ones (and their rebuild kits) as they are not made form card and I have never seen any of them leak after fitting.
But while you have the carbs out I'd recommend checking them thoroughly and setting them up.

Is it possible to remove all four float bowls with the carbs in-situ? just wondering because I have a slight leak from the bowl gasket on no.2 carb, and bowl screws in carb 3 could do with replacing with new ones - having to take the whole shebang out to get at/replace the one weepie gasket/four screws is maybe a task not worth doing until the carbs actually need a full strip n clean?
