Grim,
If you do manage to buy some cheaply, I'd suggest they would probably need more work to get them looking good than the ones you already have. With some time and patience, start by using a file to remove the deeper dings, followed by progressive grades of wet and dry paper, eventually finishing with 1200 grade, then using Solvol or similar...you'll be amazed how much they can be improved.

Hi Grim
the alloy cases on your bike can surely be polished up! As Steve says, use abrasive paper, start with coarse (grain 120) continue with middle (grain 320) and end up with fine (600 or more) . Afterwards you can polish them and they'll be like new.
Take a look at the cases of the Z1B I've restored ( Projects, Z1B restoration) The cases that were on that engine were terrible. With a lot of patience, the correct tools and a lot of elbow grease they became shiny. If I can do that, you can do it too! Go for it, give it a try, after all what do you have to loose?
Good luck

As said above.

The cases below were not as scratched but had lots of pitting in places, the same principle applies though, ie Progressive grades of Wet & Dry then get rubbing with the polish.....

During (after Wet & Dry)...

After a bit of a polish....

....and a month later, after asking for cheap cases that may be better, even though cheap, than the perfectly serviceable items in the original post, only 10 posts ever made, not even a thank you for the pointers of help!!!
Cheers,

Mark.

Wrong ! Just thought I had seen all the replies, fuck me, you wouldn't have to step out of line on here. Didn't bank on Gonzo the enforcer being straight on my case after 18 days ( not a month) but thanks to the decent folk that did help. Cheers Mike.
