That one was built as a track bike only, so the hardtail wasnt a problem. Pity tighter noise regs meant I couldn't run it anywhere except Santa Pod.

Had a battery box fabricated along with an electrics box to keep it in, both in stainless steel. While the frame was on the workshop table, I asked the welder to clean up the frame welds, a lot happier with the frame now. Though it still needs more cross bracing and the seat area finishing, which will have to wait until I know what seat / tail unit its having. He hadn't cleaned up the welds In the pic below..

Today I could finally mock up the rolling chassis having been given a pair of 41mm forks of the right length (they need rechroming so weren't worth much). I found the billet yokes on my mates workshop shelf where they'd sat unused since he made them a decade ago. Waste not, want not...
By todays standards the forks a little spindly at 41mm, while the yokes are equally modest. Just what I wanted for the bike, as they'll fit the style I am aiming for. With a complete rebuild, a one off fork brace and progressive springs, they'll be far better than those fitted as standard back in the seventies and early eighties.

The rear wheel was made for a drag bike project some years ago by my mate Jeff, once I'd convinced him to sell it to me, we had to make a matching front. The problem is finding suitable rims to bolt to the billet home made centres. In this case, I bought a damaged Astralite wheel and we cut out its two rim halves to use in this front wheel. As Astralites are made from two halves rivetted together. Pics below of the new wheel coming together. Something else that's a bit different about these wheels, is that aftermarket 'built up' wheels, use bolts and nuts to hold the rims to the centres. But in these wheels, each rim bolt doesn't use a nut on the opposite side, instead the billet centre has holes drilled and threaded to take the bolts, on alternating sides of the wheel.. so no ugly nuts on display, and less chance of an air leak.

I've ordered a pair of rear shocks from K-Tech, which should be here this week, along with a 1000 tail piece and side panels from Z-Power. Not sure if I'll be able to use the tail piece as the frame has been widened by more than an inch, so it may not fit. But I'm hoping that it may just squeeze over the frame rails.
The stainless engine mounting bolts are now done, along with the their spacers. The rear 12mm mount was a lose fit in the cases, so the cases were taken out to 1/2 inch and a 1/2 bolt made, which is now a nice snug fit. Also the faces of the mounts of the cases have been milled flat, as they usually slope slightly.
Although its far too early, I've been thinking about the paintwork... what option to go for.. there are quite a few different colour schemes to choose from if I stick to those of the standard Z1/900/1000. Which do you prefer?

The green is nice, don't really like the ice blue. I'm edging toward going for a darkish metallic blue, not sure what graphics it'll have.. Z1 / Z900 / Z1000 or perhaps something one off. I'll probably change my mind a dozen times before it finally gets painted.

Another day, another mock up. The top yoke has been drilled to take the risers, I spent far too much on a pair of remote reservoir shocks by K-Tech. They are built to the spec of a ZRX1200 (365mm) but with slightly softer springs, as the bike should be lighter than a standard ZRX, while its unlikely it'll ever carry a pillion.
The white cardboard over the drive sprocket is just to give me an idea of the size of alloy plate needed to make the outrigger bearing support. I'd hoped the Z1000 side panels and tail piece would've arrived by now, but they are still on their way. The latter may not fit, as the frame has been widened by 1 1/2 inches, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Unfortunately if my memory is correct I think the standard Z650 tailpiece is already wider than a Z1000. But like you said you can cross that bridge.

If it ever gets finished (my projects tend to take years rather than months), I'll give you first refusal if it ever gets sold, cant say fairer than that. BTW my mate Jeff who does all the real work, has another Zed project that will be for sale, not sure if it'll be completed or sold as a 'unfinished project' someday.
