DOT 5 Silicon Brake Fluid

#1 PostAuthor: Andrew_s » Sun Jan 19, 2020 11:11 am

I use DOT 5 silicon brake and clutch fluid in my TRs and whilst it gives long-life and protection to the paintwork it does make the brake pedal feel a little bit spongy, but I'd sooner that than use DOT 4 mineral fluid given the protection and known potential downside of DOT 5.

My A4 uses DOT 4, but for the reasons above I'm considering changing to silicon, I know the callipers needs to be flushed out and pipework either flushed or replaced - is anyone using DOT 5 on their bike and if so I'd be grateful for your experience.

Cheers,
Andrew

Used Dot 5 on my Yamagamma, never had any problems with the braking on it.

I’ve been using DOT 5 in every one of my bikes for years, and still have it in all my bikes with hydraulic brakes.

When I change over to DOT 5 I usually strip the system and clean thoroughly with meths and rebuild as usual then fill and bleed with the DOT 5.

Only on one bike have I ever had a problem and that was on a GS1000 which still had the original rubber hoses and the sponginess was more to do with the hoses than the fluid itself.

The benefits of the DOT 5 far outweigh the work caused by the fluid change.
