J Oil Pressure?

#1 PostAuthor: LeeJackson » Sat Apr 25, 2020 9:50 am

Gents

How much oil pressure would you expect to see in a J motor? I fitted a gauge this last week and reading some of the posts I was expecting to see something like 3 psi, but at idle were way up at 5 and then goes off the scale - its only a 15 psi gauge mind. Debben build motor so non standard. I guess being high is not a bad thing but just wanted to check as will need to change gauge for a larger scale one.

Thanks
Lee

With brand new clean fresh oil and cold everything it will be 15 to 20 PSI around idle or just above. Same as the other models.
Hot oil and hot engine it will be 3 PSI or less at idle.
Older oil with hot everything you could expect to see it climb above 3PSI as you rev it but doubt youll see much above 7 ish PSI at half throttle.
Numbers slightly reduced or enhanced by the grade of oil used!

Thanks as always excellent advice. So it was going off the scale when cold but on my essentials blast to the butchers shop today it was reading up to about ten, so gauge will work fine.

Cheers

Yeah, depends on oil weight and ambient temperature. My old Z1000 had a 0 - 15psi (Marshall) gauge and on cold days the needle went up to max and hit the stop for a mile or two. When warm would show a couple of psi when revving it - was using 10w/40.
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!
