12mm Engine Mounting Bolts

#1 PostAuthor: Hack » Sat Apr 25, 2020 5:31 pm

The two 12mm engine mounting bolts (the ones that screw into the pear nuts) on my Z900A4 don't seem to be fitted correctly.

In both cases there is no spring washer under the bolt head but instead each has a thick chrome plated washer. These washers are 1" dia x 1\4" thick and, as best as I can tell with the exhaust on, means I don't get a full nut when tightening them up.

The parts manual shows just a spring washer (461F1200), no plain washer of any thickness.

Pretty easy to rectify but before I simply swap the thick washers for spring washers I thought I'd better check they've not been installed for a reason - what has everyone else got?

The other quirk is that the parts manual shows the 71mm bolt on the left and the 56mm bolt on the right but I think it's the other way round.

In fact I think there are a few left/right errors as the full length engine mounting bolts are shown on the left, and the KHI shop manual says to install from the left, but I've only ever seen the long bolts installed from the right.

Hi Hack
if you want to know which 12 mm bolt goes where, just unscrew them and replace the flat washers with a spring washer.
There's a rectangular hole in the lower cranckcase and if you put the bolt in you can feel it coming through., If you don't feel the bolt, just switch them from one side to another.
It might take a bit of searching to find the rectangular holes...and a bit of fiddling to get the pear shaped nut on the bolt but: "practice makes perfect" !!!
As far as the long engine mounting bolts are concerned, they're instaled from the right hand side and the nut comes on the left hand side.
A little bit of advice: if you want to change the direction of the engine mounting bolts, don't remove them all at once, do it one at the time and don't fasten them immediately, just wait to torcq them up until they're all at the correct place. If you do so the engine can "sit" at the correct height which could give you just that little bit of extra space to install the camshaft cover ...
Just bare in mind that the schematics in the parts manual are only schematics and their purpose is to know how many parts there are and what number they have when you have to order a missing part...have a look in the shop manual to see where which part should come.
Good luck!
