Great news Oggers. I think you should still be getting more at idle. I would disconnect the lights and see what you get.
Looking at the wiring diagram there doesnt appear to be a lights on off switch on b3's. I would be inclined to add one.
I assume you dont have the small park light in the headlight? I use that as a driving light having wired it in to be on when the ignition is on.
Yep, crimp connectors are personal hate of mine also.

Yes it's a US B3 so lights are permantly on when ignition is latched, and there is no switch to turn them off. No bad thing, unless cranking the starter motor with a weak battery! Not disconnected the lights yet to test the theory. I may do so, but I think the root cause is a weak battery, so a new one is required in any event.

...and on that topic - seen the usual wet cell battery for around 25 quid. but the gel type are around 55. Is it worth the extra? - Amp hours are the same....

Motobatt every time. I won't use wet cell now. Only downside to Motobatt is they are bright yellow so you can see them from certain angles even when the seat is down. Wrap the bottom half with black insulation tape sorts that out though.

I always use the Motobatt options as well on all of my bikes nowadays as and when required and they do manufacture certain case sizes in black now especially for Hardly Davidson market.

I’m not certain which case size/sizes fit the Z range as my Z is still hanging onto it’s standard type battery but the part number is suffixed or prefixed with “HD”

Sorry I can’t be more specific.

Gents

You confirm my thinking ref Motorbatt and I too have had good experience of them. However, the nearest one I could find - MB10U - is a little to too tall - 155mm if memory serves, and thus may foul the seat base. The battery in at present is 146mm tall and there is just enough clearance.

Got this one in both 650's. Seems to fit fine and is 146 tall. Both of mine are b1's, though I would think yours would have the same battery.

Warren - thanks for that and that is the one I was looking at. However at the base of the advert, It gives the height as 155. What does your steel rule say?

Go on motobatts website. Search for z650b and the specification tab. It gives the l, w and d.

Yes it does - and it is indeed 146mm - to the terminals. There is another 9mm to add for the "spacer" which seems flush with the top of the battery. Overall height still looks to be 155mm or 6.1 inch according the the US website. I'll go and have another look, but pretty sure that will foul my seat.

Spacer? Are you talking about the tray Oggers? You dont need to use the tray as your battery box should have rubber cusion buttons fixed into the base so the battery is sitting on rubber not metal.
They definately fit both my 650s no problem.

No - there is another 9mm from the terminal to the top of the battery. The spacer - Motobatt terminology - is the additional U shaped terminal fixing which is flush with top of the battery.

However - if the battery comes with a tray, and this is included in the overall height, and if this tray is around 9mm thick, then yes all is well. I guess if it fits yours then it should fit mine!

Aaaahhh, I see, I wouldnt have called that a spacer. Once the provided terminals are attached, along with the loom terminals, they are about level with the top of the battery anyway so the bit on top isnt really a spacer in my eyes.
