Fitting chrome wheels to my Z900 a4

#1 PostAuthor: Dero » Sat May 08, 2021 4:34 pm

Hello All.
I have a 1976 Z900 a4 with Lester alloys.

I am considering fitting original wheels to the bike, the Lester wheels have the 6 bolt Z1 Discs, I have bought a good front wheel with the 6 bolt fitting for the disc.

My question is
Will the Speedo drive from the Lester wheel fir an original front wheel? and if it does fit how does it come off of the Lester wheel?
Do I undo the thread on the spindle? And is there anything in the Speedo drive to drop out and get lost?

Or should I try and get a new Speedo drive.
I am usually ok on this sort of thing but I don’t want to take it to pieces if I don’t need to.

Thank you in anticipation Derrick

Don't know specifically about the Lesters but most aftermarket wheels were designed to accept the factory speedo drive. Do you have a picture?

The speedo drive for a z1 6 bolt hub is part of the front axle nut fitting. see photo, (pinched from internet)

Your bike looks like Z900 A4,- should have 4 bolt discs. Also different speedo drive. Correct parts will bolt straight on

As has been said, the A4's have fronts discs with four bolts, earlier Z1's were six bolt.
I'm guessing someone has fitted earlier Z1 Lesters.

Your wheel also has the wrong axle/nuts fitted, it should pass through the fork bottoms & have nuts on the outside of the fork caps.
The actual forks look to be A4 ones, but fitted back to front, (a common mod back in the day). The drain screws should be at the back of the leg, not at the front !

I bought my Lester's, brand new, back in the day :D & they were a direct replacement for the original standard front wheel.
Once you'd transferred your discs over to the new Lester wheel it is fitted in exactly the same way as the standard wheel. The speedo drive unit just sits in position, ensuring it engages correctly & then slide the axle through & thread the two nuts onto the ends.

Thank you to those that replied,
I have a choice of wheels in the garage, I have the Lester’s which are on the bike, I have a Z1 front wheel which I wanted to fit with the twin disc again, and I have a Z900 a4 wheel with a standard disc.

I had considered fitting the a4 wheel with single disc, I bought a Speedo drive from Stoke on Trent Breakers but cant see how the Speedo works unless there is a plate under the Speedo drive?

I have everything to put an original wheel on the bike including an original spindle but I need to check is there is something under the Speedo drive.

Good Morning, and thank you to those that have replied and helped.

I have just removed the front wheel spindle and the Speedo drive didn’t fall to pieces.

As was said the Speedo drive is a direct replacement from standard wheels to the lesters so all good for fitting a new Z1 front wheel and using the twin disc from the lesters.

I have bought an original Z900 a4 front wheel, single disc which I am considering fitting, the Speedo drive is clearly different so I bought a used Speedo drive.
My question is
Does the Speedo drive sit on a cage or anything? It seems to me that if it doesn’t sit on something it will scrape the hub.
Also what about the spacers? Should there be one on each side? I can’t find a drawing on line and the Workshop Manual is not clear.

Thanks everyone, I am getting closer to having to decide which wheels to fit.

It's a while since I last had my front wheel out & being old my memory is not what it used to be ! :D
However, from memory the speedo drive just butts up to the left side of the front wheel bearing ensuring you engage/align the two tabs in the speedo drive with the tabs in the wheel. With the spindle positioned in the wheel one nut/spacer threads on to the spindle & on the right-hand side there should be a spacer followed by the second identical nut/spacer. You can then tighten the two spindle nuts & everything should butt up correctly, if it doesn't then you might not have the speedo tabs engaged correctly & they will be stopping you from tightening the spindle nuts by hand, fully. Then tighten the two nuts on the spindle. You can then spin the wheel & check that the speedo drive tab rotates, which indicates the speedo drive is correctly engaged & will rotate the speedo cable when it is fitted.

Depending upon exactly what discs you have the correct discs for an A4 are ones with four holes, but there are two different thicknesses, depending upon the market the bike was built for.
USA bikes had one disc, but was thicker than a UK bike which had twin thinner discs.

The USA bikes were available as an option with twin discs, but they would be twin thicker discs. That's both Z1's, A's, B's & A4's. The Z1's, A's & B's also had six mounting bolts.

I would be interested in those Lesters if you are going to sell them?
