Z1B carbs leaking

#1 PostAuthor: ZEDREB » Tue Aug 17, 2021 12:41 pm

Hi, Can anyone help me with the reasons and hopefully a cure for my newly acquired 1975 Z1B carbs leaking fuel through the float bowl overflow pipes? Having segregated each of the breather pipes (and placed them into glass jars) I’ve now determined this is happening across all four carburettors and with a significant amount of fuel accumulating overnight. Bizarrely the leakage still happens even when the fuel tap is in the shut off position!?!

Also, will this have an effect on the general running of the bike and will the leakage still happen with the bike running i.e. is there a risk of fuel getting onto the rear tire? Many thanks.

If they are leaking through the overflows then either the float/fuel heights are set too high, or the fuel valves in the carb bowls are worn or have debris in them.
The fuel taps are prone to leaking as the o-rings/rubber fails with modern fuel.
Overflowing carbs is a safety issue and you need to resolve it.
Feel free to PM me if you get stuck or need help as I work on carbs all the time.

Firstly, are you sure the tap is not being turned to RESERVE instead of OFF ? If not, the tap will need stripping and inspecting and/or replacing.

Sounds like old fuel in the bowls has crudded up the float valves. You'll need to remove carb bank and bowls and give a good clean out. Sometimes a tap on the bowls with a soft mallet can dislodge a sticking float but never worked for me.

Regardless of whether there is or isn't an issue with the fuel tap, you need to strip the carbs and check the float valves and float heights.

a lot of these problems are caused by the fuel tap passing fuel due to being worn, this highlights the float valves being weak in your carbs, however if you sort the fuel tap issue that is often the end of your problem.

What he said. Had this countless times on Zeds and Triples (more so if they've been stood and the taps dried out) replaced the Fuel tap and leaks stopped.

Ok, many thanks guys.....you've confirmed what I thought/suspected. The dealer has had the bike back and is now looking to fix the issue(s). Fingers crossed!
