Rev Counter Refurb Needed

#1 PostAuthor: Tonka » Thu Feb 02, 2023 6:20 pm

Hi, who would you recommend to refurbish a Z1R rev counter? The face has faded and the casing needed a paint. It's going on a Z1R that I am doing up to 'as new' condition the rev counter will be letting it down now

How do you get the crimp rings off without damaging them. Is there a special tool?

Peter Bond rebuilt my speedo after the face broke in 2. However, the texture of the face came back ripply not smooth. So if you choose him that's a point to mention

Small flat head screwdriver is all I have ever used.

Z-fever in Germany used to sell replacement crimp rings. To order you’ll have to send an email telling him what you require and asking him for a PayPal money request.

If you see my post you will see i did do it myself, trim rings come off by carefully inserting a small screwdriver under the lip on the rear, then using a tin opener type movement work your way around a bit at a time, takes a lot of time and patience but eventually they come apart. I hought my new faces from a company in Holland (cb750 faces.com) they are very good quality and can have either green or white backing depending on backlighting reqd.
They also sell the new glass cut to 88mm and new trim rings if needed.
The main problem i found after 47 years the rubber gaskets had lost their softness and were hard, so when taking them apart they get damaged if not careful, once apart soak them in hot water, then smear with silicone grease helps restore them.
I have conpleted mine, replaced faces, new glass and using original trim rings, re fitting them is still ongoing, as trim rings are very tight, new ones would be better but apart from cost you would need a proper tool to do them right, once theyv been bent the will re bend a lot easier, just need to find a way to compress the 2 halves whilst i i refit them. All would be well if i had been born an octopus as 8 hands would have helped Ha! Maybe not
