So rotor finally off, nowt wrong with starter clutch, not loose, 3 allen bolts all firmly in there and correctly torqued. A relief, would not have rested easy until I had checked so I am happy now to reassemble.
Btw, is stubborn gasket removal not the dullest activity/part of playing with our zeds?
Thanks to all for the constructive and helpful comments made that helped me address this irritating noise, hopefully she will be much quieter when running again.

Re: Noisy Alternator
I had exactly the same buzzy noise on my old 750 uni ratbike. I ignored it for ages as it didn't seem terminal, I happened to investigate one day and it was that cable retainer that was distorted and vibrating. Sometimes the cables on pattern stators won't sit nicely and distort the cable retainer.
I don't use threadlocker or over tighten the three bolts retaining the stator - nor that you have. They can be buggers for snapping on removal. I just take my time getting the stator seated properly on the register. Sometimes you need to clean insulating gunk off of the mating face.
Gasket removal can be bloody time consuming. You should try removing Gasket debris from a H**** xr that's never been opened before... takes hours, even on a single.
