Presumably the back plates are stamped out. It would be simple to add an embossed "front" or "back" mark to the process.

They even use the same DS2-1 model number etc depending on fitment but without the Dynatek packaging.

I hope they manage to put the backing plates on the right way around !

My first thoughts when removing the backplate was to check if it had any markings or stickers that would give any indications as to how it should be fitted.

The only markings that I could see where a set of numbers which had been (lightly) stamped. This mark was on the inside as fitted originally, but obviously transferred over to the outside when I flipped over the backplate.

I did have my run out to Matlock Bath - the bike ran like an absolute dream.
I was on the verge of convincing myself that it was carburettor or fuel related issues making the bike run so poorly!

I've just looked a 4 Dynas and 2 chinese copies and they are all set like the first photo in the thread.

If I put an advancer and rotor through the middle of the back plate between the pickups with the advancer showing at 1-4 F in the circular window the magnet is pointing to 1-4 pick up.

If i flip the backplate over with the advancer showing at 1-4 F in the circular window the rotor is showing at 2-3 pickup.

Surely this means the rotor was initially fitted 180 degrees out doesn't it?

The fitting instructions show it that way also.

The reason I was reading the thread was because we're trying to get my mates Z1000A running.

We put a Chinesium Dyna on and it ran out of adjustment to get it to align with the full advance mark.

Inspected the rotor against 3 Dyna rotors and the angular position of the magnet is slightly different to the Dynas.

Chinesium one on the left.

Just in case anybody wants to know or is struggling.

So going to flip the backplate to try to get better or proper alignment.

I have a similar problem have taken Dayna s of a1978 Z1R engine and tried fitting it onto a1975 Z1B engine think my bulb lights up about the tdc mark so reckon I need the earlier 3A rotor question is has anyone got one or where can I get one from dont really want to buy the whole system otherwise it’s back to points

Zed1015 post
This is a common problem.
The Z900/Z1000 Dyna's DS2-1's have a choice of two different rotors to suit the early or later ignition advancers.
One marked 3A for advancers fitted to the early Z1's and the other marked 3 for later bikes.
If you have the wrong rotor it will cause the problem you have which is well known.
It is also possible that the pick-ups are on the wrong side of the back plate and flipping it round may solve the issue.

Have you still got the damper pads in place? If not, the 'zero' point will be artificially retarded !! I've seen more missing than present.

If the advance unit still has this shim in it it might be worth removing it as they can easily jam!
