Slowly but surely I'm finding more issues, and also overcoming a few along the way too. I've done very little, constructively, just the odd bit of tinkering here and there, just five or ten minutes at a time and sussing out the extra bits that I need to source.
It now has flat drag bars fitted, a new throttle cable and the calipers have been removed and the master cylinder will be replaced by one from a 600 Bandit so that the reservoir sits flat, rather than at an angle as per the previous one (which must've been from a bike with clip-on type bars, I'm thinking GSX600F 'Teapot').
The rear master cylinder is toast, but I think I have a suitable motocross type one that'd do the trick (CRF250 or 450 I think).

Re: Another 650 for me
Does it run? Have you done a compression test or engine work on it?

Re: Another 650 for me
I've not had it running yet, or done a compression test but have turned it over on the kickstarter, so there is some compression... 'some'...
The battery is fubar'd, so that's on the list, but might whip one off another bike to see if it'll fire up. But that'll be a job for a day when there's more than just 15 minutes or so spare...

Re: Another 650 for me
doesn't need to fire up to do a compression test , just has to be turned over fast by the battery (with throttle wide open).
If compression is OK then try firing it up and see how it sounds

Re: Another 650 for me
It does if you want any meaning full readings. Compression test on a 650 should be 160psi plus HOT.
They'll run fine at about 120psi cold but anything below that it'll smoke and pressurise the gearbox and pump oil out the breather.
I even got a 650 to run with 80psi on 2 & 3 90 psi on 1 & 4. Smoked like a over oiled 2 stroke and would only start in warm weather

Re: Another 650 for me
With a bit of part-swapping going on between projects, I have a set of GSX-R 1000K4 forks spare, along with a K4 bottom yoke and a one-off top yoke.
The forks and wheel in the bike when I got it were, I think, GSX 600F, and they're okay for a 650cc Zed, but given that I have the other stuff... well... you know...
The GSX-R bottom yoke has the original stem, but it is 20mm too short, so I'm going to cut it across the middle, get a mate to spin up a stepped slug to suit (with a decent length inside each half or the original stem) and get another mate to weld it all together...

How did this 650 turn out? It looks like my cup of tea

Turn out? Gimme chance, not even put a battery to it yet...

Re: Another 650 for me
As usual, I'm not prioritising things like checking the engine's condition (there is an alternative if it's junk...) but I wanted to tidy up my garage by using some spare parts I had laying around, so got the GSX-R 1000K4 bottom yoke sorted with a 20mm spacer welded into the stem...
